I am already good enough

by | Oct 18, 2009 | Answers for Seekers, Christian Theology

Anyone who would say that he or she is already good enough to please the infinitely holy God of the universe is, to say this least, self-deceived.  Such a comment would only be a sign of the person’s arrogance and failure to see himself as he truly is, someone who is not perfect. Other times, people say that they are sincere and God will recognize that sincerity and let them into heaven. But, if sincerity were good enough to get into heaven, then why did Jesus need to die on the cross for our sins? Sincerity is no answer and no one is good enough.

Besides, how good do you have to be to get to Heaven? I would ask anyone who is claiming to be good enough about whether or not they do anything wrong. Everyone does something wrong. God is holy and requires holiness. Holiness is purity. Even though you may think you are good enough, even one sin disqualifies you from being in the presence of God. You could never be good enough. That is why you need Jesus.

The Bible says that there is none good enough. “There is none who does good, there is not even one,” (Rom. 3:12). Goodness is measured by God’s standard – not yours.

To say that you are good enough means that Christ did not have to die. But He did die to save sinners. The Bible says if righteousness can come by good deeds, then Christ didn’t need to die (Gal. 2:21); but He did, so being good isn’t enough.
