Absolution

Absolution

Absolution is, in Roman Catholicism, the act of releasing someone from their sin by God through the means of a priest and penance.  Absolution is also found in the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Anglican church.  The forgiveness of sins, absolution, is accomplished through the authority of the priest who then assigns a penance, works to accomplish, by which forgiveness is achieved.
