Phylogeny, in evolutionary theory, is the grouping of organisms on a larger scale rather than a smaller one.  For example, a phylogenetic grouping would consist of all primates without the narrower sub-classifications of various primates within that grouping.  Birds is a phylogenetic group that includes all sub-species of birds.
