I feel guilty about my past.

by | Dec 1, 2008 | Defending the Faith, Apologetics

We receive an email from someone who was struggling with the sins of his past. It is sometimes difficult to face what we have done. But, only in Jesus can we be forgiven. Though the consequences of our past may still live with us, we know that the future consequences of our sin have been removed by Christ so that we can spend eternity with him. Nevertheless, here is his email with a response.

Email:  I still always feel guilty of my past.  How can I get past that feeling?  I love God and believe in him.

Do not trust your feelings, “The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it?” (Jer. 17:9).  Trust the word of God.  Remember the Prodigal Son who insulted his father, turned his back on his religion and his God, then went and visited prostitutes?  Only after he was destitute, did he return; and the father received him openly in a very forgiving way.  This is an image of the great grace and forgiveness of God.  You must trust the forgiveness of God even more then you trust your own feelings.  If God has forgiven you, then you are forgiven.

You must understand that the grace of God is far greater than your sins; and even though you have committed great ones, the blood of Christ is greater than your sin, and Jesus has cleansed you.  Rest in that truth and rejoice that the Lord will not remember your sins anymore.  So, why should you?
