CARM Newsletter 08-11-06

Welcome to the August 11, 2006 Newsletter

Update
This newsletter comes out early because I will be out of the state next week, Matt Slick.

Sacramento Trip
I will be in Sacramento from the 14th through the 19th at the new Mormon Temple.  I will be with another Ministry (Mormonism research Ministry, www.mrm.org) and we will be passing out literature that reveals what Mormonism actually teaches so that people will be properly informed about the Mormon religion.  If you are in the area and would be interested in meeting for dinner some night, helping us pass out literature, or have me speak at your church, please let me know at [email protected]

I had mentioned in earlier newsletters that I would not be able to go because CARM had suffered a financial setback with some tax problems (and exorbitant C.P.A. bills).  We are caught up on the taxes now, but our buffer is down to zero.  That is why I was looking for a job and was waiting to be offered one this week.  But, the job was offered to someone else.  Therefore, since a woman in Arizona has offered to sponsor my trip to the Sacramento Mormon Temple opening, it looks like I'll be going.  Thanks, Jane.

Suggestions?
Do you have any suggestions for the CARM newsletter or the CARM website?  If so, please contact us at [email protected]  We want to know what you think, areas of need that you would like to see addressed, as well as any comments you might have.

About Asking
We at CARM are often hesitant about asking for needs.  Please understand that our goal is to bring glory to God and to equip Christians for the work of the ministry, not to be beggars.  There is so much to be done and we need lots of help to accomplish it (video work, audio lessons, writing, research, internet development, tracts, lessons, PowerPoint, etc.).  But, we can't do these things without support.  It costs money to get printers, software, video equipment, etc.  But, we can do it by God's grace.

One of the problems we face is whether or not to let those need to be known with each newsletter.  We do not want to appear that all we are doing is asking for money.  But, we have legitimate needs and we need to let the body of Christ know about them.  Please bear with us as we attempt to graciously and humbly do God's work and yet at the same time seek help from the very body of Christ that we're seeking to edify.

Is there a better way?
Can you think of a better, easier, and more cost-effective way of distributing Christian information than the Internet?  CARM is an Internet-based ministry that is reaching literally millions of people all over the world.  If you are burdened by the Lord to reach out, then perhaps you might consider supporting CARM with a recurring five dollar a month donation.  If you are interested, please sign up here.  If enough people signed up at five dollars a month, CARM could accomplish a great deal more.  We would use the donations to hire workers for web design, staff needs, and much more.  Please prayerfully consider it.

CARM Needs - same as last newsletter.
Letting our needs be known.  We are definitely planning to expand, to move ahead in spite of our recent setbacks.  The Lord provides where He guides.

  • Printer Fund
One of the additional projects we hope to get going is writing evangelism tracts and brochures to send out to pastors, churches, and radio stations.  For this we would like to have a color laser printer.  We are still researching them and it looks like the Dell 3110cn Printer seems to be a good deal for around $500.  We also need a duplexer (for double sided copying, for $199) and 1 Gigabyte of additional ram at $150 (printer graphics for brochures and tracts).  So we need $850 for the printer.  If you would like to contribute to the printer please check out CARM printer fund. It is up to $60.

Also, if you have experience with color laser printers and have a good recommendation that is in the same price range, please let us know.

  • Laptop
CARM has need of a laptop for the radio show and as a back up system in case the main CARM computer breaks.  This will help us with speaking engagements as well.  Dell puts out a great product.  The XPS M1210  with the basic bells and whistles needed for a decent system would be around $1500.

  • Fund Raising
After much discussion with two of the board members of CARM, we have concluded that in order for CARM to progress and to be able to meet the new needs, research requests, and developing projects, we need to hire someone.  This is a major event and a necessary one.  We hope to raise $30,000 support the first year salary for the new person.  We are letting people know about the need so that you can pray.  The Lord provides where he guides.  Right now, CARM only is able to support one person, Matt Slick.

If we had the funding for another person to work with CARM, this person would need to be able to manage projects, research, write, and do web development.  There is a great deal to do at CARM and this Ministry has the potential of reaching millions.  In fact, the CARM website was accessed 1.2 million times last month in the CARM discussion board was accessed over 2 million times.

  • Programming Need
We need someone to write a program for CARM that will allow people to save web pages to projects that they can name.  They could log in (email/password) and save various CARM articles to their projects.  This would not mean that people had to log in to view CARM.  This is an extra feature should anyone want to use it.

Reminder:  The Online Schools are now for an Unlimited Duration
The CARM online schools (Theology, Apologetics, and Critical Thinking) are now for an unlimited duration when you sign-up.  For those of you who already have, I will gladly extend your access time.  Just let us know at [email protected] Also, the program that governs how the school is accessed has a maximum duration of 20 years -- but we'll extend it another 20 when you get there.  Please consider supporting CARM and getting something in return.  This is a major Ministry offering of CARM that is used both to support CARM and to equip Christians. Please consider signing up for the schools so that you can defend the Christian faith better.  By the way, I'm offering all three schools at a substantial discount if you are interested.

The Boise Weekly
Someone has donated $350 towards the fund for putting an ad for the Faith and Reason Radio Show (hosted by Matt Slick of CARM) in a local newspaper that is aimed towards unbelievers.  That will cover the adds for one month.  Praise God and thanks.

CARM Modifications
We are still working hard on researching and modifying the CARM site for a future makeover.  (See the sample layout page for articles).  In addition, we will open CARM up for other writers to contribute, if they are qualified.

Want to write for CARM?
http://www.carm.org/index/writers.htm
We are doing a revamp of the CARM website and we will be opening it up to other writers.  However, the qualifications to be able to write for CARM will be rather high.  We're looking for theologically trained Christians (or who have proven their grasp of Christian theology) who have at least a bachelor's degree.  Masters degree level is preferred.  However, we are aware that there are very gifted researchers and writers who do not have bachelors or Masters degrees.  We are open to discussions with them as well.  If you think that you would be interested in writing for CARM, please contact CARM at [email protected]  We are trying to begin the dialogue process.

Those who write for CARM would have to understand that what ever is used on CARM becomes the property of CARM.  Of course, the original author would be able to use the material elsewhere.  The point is to allow CARM to modify the articles, if necessary, and to sell them in any potential future works such as the MOAN (mother of all notebooks), and other such offerings.  Furthermore, there is a "CARM style" of writing.  It is simplistic and to the point and anyone who would write for CARM would have to learn how to do that.  It isn't difficult and we would explain it over the phone.

Podcasting
CARM now has podcasting ability:  http://feeds.feedburner.com/carmorgpodcasting.

Radio
The owners at the Christian radio station are behind the Faith and Reason Radio Show 100% and want to expand into other markers.  Thank you for the suggestions about possible radio stations.  If you have not already sent me a suggestion, please do so at [email protected]   Second, we're looking for sponsors who would be interested in expanding the Faith and Reason radio show  Again, if you are interested in doing this, please contact me at the same e-mail address.

Radio Archives

We have some radio shows archived here http://www.live365.com/stations/matt_slick.  You can also listen live to the show at http://www.myfamilyradio.com.  I'm on at 6pm Mountain time on the AM station.

Love and Hate mail

CARM is constantly getting e-mails of thanks and praise and condemnation.  Here are a few...in the raw.

  • Love mail:

    • I really enjoy the CARM website.  I have visited it off and on for the past year or so.

    • This is a great webpage with lots of very good Christian teaching on it, it has certainly spoken to me and given me encouragement, keep it up!   God bless from a fellow Christian.

    • I have just started reading your website on jehovah's witnesses but I already like it.  While reading the section on  Jehovah's Witnesses and Mental Health I was slightly amazed because I am still (for the moment) a witness and I had been taking medication for depression until recently.  Many other witnesses I know are also on depression medication.  However, as I started attending meetings less and became less involved in the organization, I found that I was feeling better, and this was after I stopped taking medication.

  • Hate mail:

    • "What a transparent and combative attitude you have taken towards your fellow human being. . . Your intolerance and closed-mindedness pervades the entire text you have written. . .You have a very, very, large hole in the chinks of your hateful armor. . . And don't reply please, unless you change your rhetoric."

    • "I am saddened by this page and its content."

    • "Consider yourself warned, however, that what you do is a great offense in the eyes of the lord"

    • "Lets see, your wrong about almost everything...listen, pal, you don't know what your talking about. Feelings as mine don't happen everyday."

    • "Honestly Matthew, for you to so recklessly say the mean spirited things you say about Mormons, and others....don't you feel deja vu? The same tactics were used against Jesus (although you were unsuccessful then." too!)

    • "Just checking in to see if you've been able to figure out the truth and stop selling the lies. Let me know if you need help."

From the Theological Dictionary
Diaspora
Dispersion. Biblically, it refers to the dispersion of the Jews outside of Israel from the time of the Babylonian Captivity until now.  It has also been applied to the dispersion of Christians after 70 A.D. when Rome sacked Jerusalem and thousands of Christians fled and dispersed throughout the Mediterranean area.
