Lesson 01.02

Inspiration and Inerrancy, Answers

  1. What does the word "inspiration" mean?
         The word "inspiration" means God-breathed.

  2. Does inspiration of the Bible mean that the writers were like robots, dictating what was told to them?
No.  The writers were free to write what they wanted as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.  The writings reflect the personality and style of the various writers. Yet, the personality and style of the writers did not degrade the quality or authority of the biblical writing.

  3. What is a great verse that states the Bible is inspired?
"All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work," (2 Tim. 3:16-17)

  4. What are some of the scientific accuracies listed in the Bible?
There are several, but three of them are as follows.  The earth is suspended in nothing (Job. 26:7); The nature of health, sanitation, and sickness (Gen. 17:9-14; Lev. 12-14); The concept of entropy, that energy is running down (Psalm 102:26).

  5. What does it mean to say the Bible is inerrant?
It means that the Bible is without error in the original documents and that everything that it addresses is correct.

  6. What is a good evidence for the inspiration of the Bible?
Prophecy and its fulfillment is a good way of demonstrating the inspiration of scripture.

  7. What scripture can you go to, read and ask a person what it means as a way of demonstrating the inspiration of the Bible?
Psalm 22:11-18 is very useful for this purpose:  It says, "Be not far from me, for trouble is near; for there is none to help. 12 Many bulls have surrounded me; strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me. 13 They open wide their mouth at me, as a ravening and a roaring lion. 14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within me. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue cleaves to my jaws; and Thou dost lay me in the dust of death. 16 For dogs have surrounded me; a band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me; 18 They divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots."
