What is spiritism?

by | Sep 7, 2009 | Questions, Religions

Spiritism is the belief in the existence of non-physical beings, or spirits, that inhabit a spirit world. These spirits inhabit physical bodies on a temporary basis in order to learn and improve their spiritual and intellectual condition.  Upon death, the spirits depart. Therefore, some people will seek to contact these departed spirits by using occult means such as séances where the spirits allegedly communicate via noises, movement of objects, or even materializations. Those involved in spiritism, often try and contact the spirits, which can include people who have died.  The contact is for various reasons: to learn about the future, to influence the outcome of future events, and to gain knowledge.  Mediums are used in such attempted contacts. In séances, people gather in a circle in a dimly lit room while a medium guides the people in an attempt to contact the spirit world.

“Spiritism came to bring a new light on Christians’ thoughts and to bring hope to humanity. The doctrine organized by Allan Kardec in the nineteenth century, from the teachings of superior minds, teaches us that the state of suffering experienced in the planet Earth is only transitory. It also tells us that we are evolving spirits and to achieve happiness only depends on our own efforts. Knowing Spiritism, we come to experience a whole new perception of the world and life, which leads us to seek inner-reform and truthful approach to God.” https://spiritisthouston.org/who-we-are/what-is-spiritism/

Of course, the Bible teaches us that there is a spiritual world that is comprised of both angelic and demonic forces.  We are forbidden from Scripture to practice spiritism because it opens up the individual to demonic oppression.

Deut. 18:10-11, “There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, 11 or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead.”
