Can God forgive a backslider who has participated in occult practices?

by Matt Slick

Yes, God can forgive a backslider who has participated in occult practices.  The occult is a form of sorcery with various aspects such as attempting to contact the dead, astral projection, chakra cleansing, claiming to have supernatural powers, performing incantations and spells to influence people, seeking to determine the future, etc.  All of these are dangerous, sinful, and should be avoided.  But they can all be forgiven because Jesus is greater than them all.

When a person comes to faith in Christ, all his past sins are forgiven.  Likewise, when a Christian backsides and then later repents, as he comes to the cross and confesses his sins, the Lord "is faithful and just to forgive us our sins" (John 1:9).  Not only can the sins be forgiven, but the person who was involved with them should also renounce all that he was involved with because it's possible the person opened up certain spiritual doors which need to be closed.  The occult is dangerous, and demonic forces are always looking for people through whom they can work and whom they can oppress.  So, if you have been involved in the occult and are now repentant and have confessed your sin to God to ask forgiveness through Jesus, then your sins are forgiven.  But, you probably should call the elders of your church and have them pray over you and in your home so as to "close the doors" that may have been opened during occult practices.
