Dialogue with Muslims about evidence why Islam is true

by | Nov 4, 2014 | Dialogues, Apologetics

In this dialogue, I was in a chat room full of Muslims talking with two of them about what the Quran says in Surah 86:5-7 that the seed of a man is formed between the backbone and the ribs.  This is obviously wrong. According to Islam, since the Quran is supposed to be a perfect book, a perfect revelation from their god,  if there is one thing in it, then Islam cannot be trusted. They will go to almost any length to explain away mistakes in the Quran.

Matt: I have a question.  Can you tell me what evidence there is that Islam is true?
Usman:  Islam is true because the Quran has many miraculous truths in it that could not have been known when it was written.  The Bible has lots of contradictions.
Matt: Instead of attacking the Bible, can you just tell me the evidence for Islam?  The same type of evidence is in the Bible.  Besides, there are things in the Quran that are wrong.
Usman: Like what?
Matt:  Sperm comes from the chest of a man: “Now let man but think from what he is created! He is created from a drop emitted-Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs,” (Quran 86:5-7).   [This is from the CARM article The Qur’an and the formation of sperm error]
Usman:  There are websites that have false things about Islam and I don’t know if that translation is right.  Go here, http://Quran.com/86/5-7
Matt: I just checked the Quran.com site.

[The following chart is what I found. I inserted it here for you to see.  Notice that CARM quotes Yusuf Ali]

Surah 86:5
Sahih International So let man observe from what he was created.
Muhsin Khan So let man see from what he is created!
Pickthall So let man consider from what he is created.
Yusuf Ali Now let man but think from what he is created!
Surah 86:6
Sahih International He was created from a fluid, ejected,
Muhsin Khan He is created from a water gushing forth.
Pickthall He is created from a gushing fluid
Yusuf Ali He is created from a drop emitted-
Surah 86:7
Sahih International Emerging from between the backbone and the ribs.
Muhsin Khan Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs,
Pickthall That issued from between the loins and ribs.
Yusuf Ali Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs:

Matt: “So let man observe from what he was created. He was created from a fluid, ejected, Emerging from between the backbone and the ribs.” [This is the Sahih International Translation]
Usman: The Quran says man is created from Alaq.
Zarqawi: Yes that’s is from the Quran Matt.
Matt: I see, so the quote I first used is from Yusuf Ali.  The quote is correct.
Zarqawi: I don’t see a problem with this verse.
Matt: You don’t? but sperm does not come from a man’s chest.
Usman: So let man observe from what he was created. He was created from a fluid, ejected, Emerging from between the backbone and the ribs.
Zarqawi: It doesn’t say chest.
Matt: Between the backbone and ribs is the chest.
Usman: Between the backbone and the ribs where is that located on the body?  Where is the backbone?
Matt: Between the backbone and the ribs is not the chest? I see it as a big problem.
Usman: Matt where is the backbone located?
Matt: It says from between the backbone and the ribs.  The ribs is the chest area.  Don’t you know that?
Usman: Yes
Matt: Is the Quran right in that verse?
Zarqawi: Yes
Matt: So sperm comes from the chest?
Zarqawi: It doesn’t say chest.  It would have said chest if it was chest.
Matt: What is meant by “from between the backbone and the ribs”?  Where exactly is that?
Zarqawi: That means chest to you.  Do you know the word between in English?
Matt: Can you please tell me where is “between the backbone and the ribs”?
Zarqawi: Its not the chest.
Usman: The chest is on the front right?
Matt: The chest is NOT between the backbone and the ribs?
Zarqawi: It seems you cant understand the word between.
Matt: “Anatomy. the trunk of the body from the neck to the abdomen; thorax.” That is from dictionary.reference.com defining the word chest.
Zarqawi: Go define between next.
Matt: Sorry, I can’t take you seriously.
Zarqawi: Seems you don’t understand what that means
Matt: Seems you don’t
Zarqawi: Ok so bye.  Anyways, if Allah says this, then it is, khalaas, He is our creator, do we know more than him? Of course not.  So those who say otherwise, exit stage left.
Matt: Can anyone else answer it?

At this point, the Muslims stopped dialoguing with me. That was interesting that they would, of course, refuse to see the problem. But, of course, they cannot admit there’s a problem in the Quran because if they did, they would have to give up Islam. Notice that when I asked him where is “between the backbone of the ribs” they would not answer. Zarqawi just that it was not the chest, but neither told me exactly where it is.  They were stumped.
