Abomination

An abomination is a detestable and shameful act, person, or object.  The word “abomination(s)” occurs 113 times in the New American Standard Bible, but other words are used used to describe the same thing are also used, such as “detestable” and “disgusting thing.”  The word abomination is used generically as a reference to an improper sacrifice (Deut. 17:1), idolatrous practices (2 Kings 16:3), sorcery (Deut. 18:10-12), sin (Isaiah 66:3), idol worship (Isaiah 44:19), idolatrous objects (Jer. 4:1; 7;30), sexual immorality (Lev. 18:22; Ezek. 22:11), the immorality of the apostate church Babylon (Rev. 17:1-13), etc.
