mantleIn relationship to the earth, the mantle is in that part of the Earth that exists between the outer core and the crust. It is about 3,000 km thick. It consists of solid rock. The upper mantle is the outermost layer and goes to a depth of about 400 km. The transition zone goes to about 600 km. The lower mantel goes down to about 2,800 km.
