by | Mar 14, 2023 | Quotes by Topic, Early Church Fathers

The church fathers are not always in unanimous consensus. They differ on many topics. Here, we’re looking at John 6:39.

John 6:39, “This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day.”

When we look at Church Fathers and John 6:39, you will notice that they disagree.

The Church Fathers on John 6:39

John 6:39
“This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day.”
Augustine “These truly come to Christ, because they come in such wise as He Himself says, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me, and him that cometh to me I will not cast out; and a little after He says, “This is the will of the Father who hath sent me, that of all that He hath given me I shall lose nothing.” From Him, therefore, is given also perseverance in good even to the end; for it is not given save to those who shall not perish, since they who do not persevere shall perish.”

Perseverance is given by God
Augustine “But of such as these none perishes, because “of all that the Father hath given Him, He will lose none.”  Whoever, therefore, is of these does not perish at all; nor was any who perishes ever of these. For which reason it is said, “They went out from among us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would certainly have continued with us.”

None of His perish
Chrysostom “And in another place He saith, “Of all that Thou gavest Me, I will surely lose nothing. Yet not only was he i.e. the traitor. lost, but also many afterwards; how then saith He, “I will in nowise lose”? οὐ μὴ ἀπ “For My part, I will not lose.” So in another place, declaring the matter was more clearly, He said, “I will in nowise cast out. Not through fault of Mine, not because I either instigate or abandon them; but if they start away of themselves, I draw them not by necessity.”

People can lose themselves
Jerome “And that which is written in the same book: “My beloved is white and ruddy.” These men are his true followers who have not 4.defiled their garments with women, for they have continued virgins, who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. And so they shall be in white clothing. Then shall the saying of our Lord appear perfectly realised: “All that my Father has given me, I shall not lose aught thereof, but I will raise it up again at the last day;”

All given to Jesus are Eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven.
