Is Jesus going to be a man forever?

by | Jan 19, 2018 | Jesus, Questions

Yes, Jesus is going to be a man forever.  Nothing in Scripture states that he will stop being a man. Unfortunately, a lot of Christians think that Jesus stopped being a man when he ascended into heaven and is a kind of spirit. That is not the correct teaching. Let me explain.

Jesus is a man right now

Jesus prophesied that he would be resurrected in the same body he died in (John 2:19-21). We know that he was resurrected in a glorified body (1 Corinthians 15:35-45). Furthermore, after his resurrection, he appeared to the disciples and showed them that he possessed “flesh and bones” (Luke 24:39) and also showed them his hands and his side (John 20:19-21).  He said to be a man (1 Tim. 2:5) and is in bodily form (Colossians 2:9).  So, Jesus is a man right now.

Jesus is a priest

Not many people know this, but Jesus has three offices: prophet, priest, and king.  Jesus is a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 5:6; 6:20).  But, you cannot be a priest if you’re not a man (Num. 4:1-3).  Remember, Jesus was born under the Old Testament covenant and was subject to the law (Galatians 4:4). Therefore, to enter into that priesthood, he had to be 30 years of age (Numbers 4:1-3), receive a verbal blessing (Exodus 39:43; Numbers 6:22-27; Matthew 3:17), the anointed (Exodus 29:7; Leviticus 8:12; 1 John 2:20, 27; Matt. 3:16), and washed with water (Exodus 29:1-4; Leviticus 8:6-7; Matt. 3:16)

Jesus is a high priest forever

The Scriptures tell us that Jesus is a high priest forever. The high priest is the one who offered sacrifices for the sins of the people of Israel. This was done once a year. But Jesus offered the sacrifice once for all (Hebrews 7:27). Nevertheless, Scripture tells us that he will be this priest after the order of Melchizedek forever.

  • Hebrews 5:6, just as He also says in another passage, “YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK.”
  • Hebrews 6:20, “where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”
  • Hebrews 7:24, “but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever, holds His priesthood permanently.”

Jesus intercedes forever

The Scriptures tell us that Jesus, as a priest after the order of Melchizedek, intercedes for us forever.

  • Hebrews 7:25, “Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him since He always lives to make intercession for them.”

Conclusion

For clarification, Jesus presently is both divine and human. He is both God and man. He will forever remain in this condition.  As far as Jesus remaining a man, let’s summarize. Since Jesus is a man right now (1 Tim. 2:5; Col. 2:9), and a priest forever (Hebrews 5:6; 6:20; 7:24), who intercedes for us forever (Hebrews 7:25), and since he cannot be a priest if he is not a man (Numbers 4:1-3), then it is logically necessary that Jesus will forever be a man as he forever holds his office of the priesthood after the order of Melchizedek.
