What are the similarities between Mormonism and Islam?

There are many similarities between Mormonism and Islam.  Both teach that the Bible is corrupt yet the Bible predicts their respective prophets.  Both teach that angels visited their prophets in order to restore the true religion and that their prophets are closely related to the means of salvation.  Both have new sacred books (Book of Mormon and the Quran) that they claim were revealed by inspiration.  Both say that their God is the only true God, that their religion is the only true religion, and salvation is by works.

Below is a table with documentation from both Mormon sources and Islamic sources, categorized by similarities.

However, worth noting is that there are also significant differences between Mormonism and Islam.  Mormonism is polytheistic where Islam is not.  Jesus is one of three gods in the godhead in Mormonism, where Islam teaches only one God.  Mormonism teaches people have the potential becoming gods where Islam would deny that. Mormonism says that Jesus was crucified, where Islam does not.

I leave it to you to examine the similarities and draw your own conclusions from them.  In my opinion, the same demonic force is behind both of them.

The Claim Mormonism Islam
The Bible is corrupted

“I believe the Bible as it read when it came from the pen of the original writers. Ignorant translators, careless transcribers, or designing and corrupt priests have committed many errors(Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 327).

There are many things in the Bible which do not, as they now stand, accord with the revelations of the Holy Ghost to me.(Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 310. See also History of the Church 5:425).

Tahrif, some of the sacred writings of God have become corrupted.  The Tawrat (Torah) give to Moses (Musa), the Psalms (Zabur) to David (Daud), the Gospel (injil) to Jesus (Isa).

There are the books of Abraham (Surah 87:18-19) which were lost.

The Bible prophecied their prophet's coming

Mormons use the Bible when it souts them to support their doctrines but deny it when it does not.  So, they appeal to Ezekiel in support of Mormonism.

Ezekiel 37:19, "say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, 'Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel, his companions; and I will put them with it, with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they will be one in My hand.'"

Deut. 18:18, "I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him."

Note: This is in reference to raising someone from the Jews (countrymen)

Surah 46:10, "Say: 'See ye? If (this teaching) be from Allah, and ye reject it, and a witness from among the Children of Israel testifies to its similarity (with earlier scripture), and has believed while ye are arrogant, (how unjust ye are!) truly, Allah guides not a people unjust.”

Angelic visitation to their prophets to restore the truth

“John, writing in the New Testament's book of Revelation, foresaw ‘another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people.’ One specific angel held keys of responsibility for the Book of Mormon. That was the angel Moroni! These examples are but a few of many biblical doctrines that are clarified by scriptures of the Restoration” (Russell M. Nelson, “Scriptural Witnesses,” Ensign (Conference Edition), November 2007, pp. 44-45).

Surah 2:97, "Say: 'Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel—for he brings down the (revelation) to thy heart by Allah’s will, a confirmation of what went before, and guidance and glad tidings for those who believe.'"

Surah 53:4-9, "It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 5 He was taught by one Mighty in Power, 6 Endued with Wisdom: for he appeared (in stately form); 7 While he was in the highest part of the horizon: 8 Then he approached and came closer, 9 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer."

Their new sacred book revealed by inspiration

“Thus the Book of Mormon was translated by the gift and power of God, and not by any power of man’” (Russell M. Nelson, “A Treasured Testament,” Ensign, July 1993, p. 61. Citing David Whitmer, An Address to All Believers in Christ, p. 12).

Surah 6:19, "Say: 'What thing is most weighty in evidence?” Say: “Allah is witness between me and you; This Qur’an hath been revealed to me by inspiration, that I may warn you and all whom it reaches. Can ye possibly bear witness that besides Allah there is another Allah?” Say: “Nay! I cannot bear witness!” Say: “But in truth He is the one Allah, and I truly am innocent of (your blasphemy of) joining others with Him.”

Their "new book" is the most correct

“I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book” (Joseph Smith, History of the Church 4:461. See also Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 194).

Surah 4:82, "Do they not consider the Qur’an (with care)? Had it been from other Than Allah, they would surely have found therein Much discrepancy."

Surah 17:105, "We sent down the (Qur’an) in Truth, and in Truth has it descended: and We sent thee but to give Glad Tidings and to warn (sinners).

Surah 39:28, "(It is) a Qur’an in Arabic, without any crookedness (therein): in order that they may guard against Evil."

Closely associate their prophets with God

"President Harold B. Lee, 11th President of the LDS church,  “A testimony of Joseph Smith is vital. No man can accept Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world, no man can accept this as His church, the Church of Jesus Christ, unless he can accept Joseph Smith as God's mouthpiece and the restorer of His work in these latter days.” (The Teachings of Harold B. Lee, p. 371).

Surah 3:32, "Say: 'Obey Allah and His Apostle': But if they turn back, Allah loveth not those who reject Faith."

Surah 8:20, "O ye who believe! Obey Allah and His Apostle, and turn not away from him when ye hear (him speak).”

Note: The phrase "Allah and his Apostle" occurs 72 times in the Quran, Yusuf Ali's translation.  The phrase "Obey Allah and his Apostle" occurs 12 times.

Their god is the true god

“And gave unto them commandments that they should love and serve him, the only living and true God, and that he should be the only being whom they should worship” (Doctrine and Covenants 20:19)."

Surah 3:62, "This is the true account: There is no god except Allah; and Allah - He is indeed the Exalted in Power, the Wise."

Their religion is the true religion

"True religion, the religion of Jesus Christ, was instituted of God for the benefit of man, and it is found only in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints(Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, 1966, p. 626)."

Surah 3:19, "The Religion before Allah is Islam (submission to His Will): Nor did the People of the Book dissent therefrom except through envy of each other, after knowledge had come to them. But if any deny the Signs of Allah, Allah is swift in calling to account."

Surah 3:85, "If anyone desires a religion other than Islam (submission to Allah), never will it be accepted of him; and in the Hereafter He will be in the ranks of those who have lost (All spiritual good)."

Deny the biblical doctrine of the Trinity

“The ancient prophets knew that the Godhead consisted of three separate and distinct personages, each of whom had a definite work to perform, and yet they all worked in perfect unity as one. The three Gods constituted the Holy Trinity(Milton R. Hunter [70s member], Pearl of Great Price Commentary, p. 52).

Note: The Biblical Trinity is that there is one God in three distinct and simultaneous persons:  the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Surah 4:171, "O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: Nor say of Allah aught but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) an apostle of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him: so believe in Allah and His apostles. Say not “Trinity”: desist: it will be better for you: for Allah is one Allah: Glory be to Him: (far exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is Allah as a Disposer of affairs."

Additional Scriptures

“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints accepts four books as scripture: the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. These books are called the standard works of the Church. The inspired words of our living prophets are also accepted as scripture” (Gospel Principles, 2009, p. 45).

Surah 2:185, "Ramadhan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur’an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong)...."

Note: Muslims believe the Quran (lit. 'recitation') is the divine book from Allah to Muhammad, who was 40, through the angel Gabriel over a 23 period. It was first revealed in the year 609

Salvation by works

2 Nephi 25:23, "For we labor diligently to write, to persuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do."

Moroni 10:32, "Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God."

10th President Joseph Fielding Smith “One of the most pernicious doctrines ever advocated by man, is the doctrine of ‘justification by faith alone,’ which has entered into, the hearts of millions since the days of the so-called ‘reformation.’” (Joseph Fielding Smith, The Restoration of All Things, 1964, p. 192).

The Sectarian Dogma of Justification by Faith Alone has exercised an influence for evil. The idea upon which this pernicious doctrine was founded was at first associated with that of an absolute predestination, by which man was foredoomed to destruction, or to an undeserved salvation” (James E. Talmage, Articles of Faith, 1984, p. 432).

Surah 4:13-15, "Those are limits set by Allah: those who obey Allah and His Apostle will be admitted to Gardens with rivers flowing beneath, to abide therein (for ever) and that will be the supreme achievement.  14 But those who disobey Allah and His Apostle and transgress His limits will be admitted to a Fire, to abide therein: And they shall have a humiliating punishment."

Surah 5:9, "To those who believe and do deeds of righteousness hath Allah promised forgiveness and a great reward."

Surah 7:8-9, "The balance that day will be true (to nicety): those whose scale (of good) will be heavy, will prosper:  9 Those whose scale will be light, will be their souls in perdition, for that they wrongfully treated Our signs."

Surah 8:29, " O ye who believe! If ye fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion (to judge between right and wrong), remove from you (all) evil (that may afflict) you, and forgive you: for Allah is the Lord of grace unbounded."

Surah 17:9, "Verily this Qur’an doth guide to that which is most right (or stable), and giveth the Glad Tidings to the Believers who work deeds of righteousness, that they shall have a magnificent reward."

Testimony

"I bear my testimony that Joseph Smith is a true prophet of God, that the Book of Mormon is true, and the LDS church is the restored Church."

Note:  In order to be considered a true Mormon, a person must bear testimony of that Joseph Smith is a prophet of God and that the LDS church is the restored church.

"There is no God but Allah, and Mumammad is his prophet."

Note:  In Islam, in order to be considered a Muslim, a person must recite the Shahada, the profession of Allah and Muhammad.
