CARM Newsletter, 07-23-10

  • New Newsletter Format - We decided to simplify things.  So, we took a look at the newsletter and stripped it down a bit.  Hope you like it.  But don't worry, the perennial favorite "Hate Mail" is still included at the end of the newsletter.
  • Radio debates - If you've been following the CARM radio show any, you'll know that Dr. Sungenis was on.  Dr. Sungenis is one of the world's top Pro-Catholic Apologists.  Matt has had three discussions with him.  See below for Matt's account of what happened.
  • Support - The Summer months are tough.  Our income has been drastically reduced as compared to last year at this time.  If things don't improve, we will be forced to make major cutbacks in a couple of months, stop paying our help, and stop the radio show.  So, we are asking for your support of $5 a month -- its just a couple cups of coffee a month -- and a small step of faith in an effort to support this ministry.  But, we aren't just asking to ask.  Following is a list of our expenses so you'll know what you're supporting.  Oh, and a HUGE thanks to those of you who already are supporting us.
    • Matt Slick is the president and founder of CARM.  Matt works on carm approximately 50+ hours weekly, does the radio show, writes articles, oversees all the employees, teaches, etc.  He gets a salary so he can do this full time and support his family.
    • Ryan Turner is in charge of the Spanish version of CARM (  He also supervises various volunteers who answer emails, edit, and research for the site.  Ryan also writes articles for CARM.  He has been with us for about three years.  He has a part-time job and is also supported by donations raised for him.
    • Diane oversees the 90+ discussion boards, 15+ volunteers that moderate those boards (that gets 3,000+ posts a day), and the chat room.  She has been with CARM for 12+ years and worked 40 hours a week for free for about 10 of those years.  We are now paying her a small monthly salary; after all, the workman is worthy of his wage (1 Cor. 9:3-18). She is a huge asset and deserves a lot more than she is getting.
    • Aaron is our tech person who works for CARM on a part-time basis (he has another job doing programming).  He configures the CARM site, makes updates to the software, and fixes various technical issues.  He is presently working on retainer with CARM and is developing the new LMS (Learning Management Software) which will house the online schools in a more interactive manner.
    • Simone - does light bookkeeping, P.O. Box orders, inputs database information, does mailings.  She works 15 hours a week.
    • Ken - will be supervising the salespeople who will soon be taking the three CARM Online Schools of Theology, Apologetics, and Critical Thinking to Churches.  Ken also arranges guests for the radio show.  He works approximately 15-20 hours a week.  We hope to get him fulltime in the future and use him for fund raising, expansion of the radio show, internet advertising of CARM, etc.
    • Don is our accountant and oversees the QuickBooks online account with CARM.  He makes sure things are balanced and proper.  He's a real asset.
    • Radio Show has no advertisers and is supported through the CARM ministry on a monthly basis.  Radio shows are not cheap.
    • Other:  Toll free office number, computer parts and software, internet, printing costs, free material, cameras, books, etc.
    • Future Plans
      • Book:  The Family Teaching Course, a manual designed to be used after dinnertime, at the table, to help parents teach their children what the Christian faith is and how to defend it, so they won't lose their faith when they attend secular school.  Statistically 80% of the children raised in a Christian home and attend a Christian church lose their faith within two years of attending a secular college.
      • Book:  The Basics of the Christian faith.  An easy to use listing of Christian doctrines with approximately two to three pages explaining each topic.  Quick and easy.
      • Other: Expand CARM, expand Radio Show, produce CARM in other languages, develop seminars, utubevideos/carmorg, PowerPoint Slides, etc.
    • Stats:  CARM gets about 32,000 pages views a day and more than 15,000 visitors a day.  It is an extremely efficient way of getting solid biblical information and answers out to people all over the world.
  • $5 is not much.  Would you please consider a small monthly donation?  It is easy to do.  You just go to, go down to the green $5 Monthly Recurring Donation button, click it, fill out the form on the page and you're done.  It is a secure server so it is safe.  Also, it is easy to cancel any time.  You just log into your account and cancel it - we can cancel it if you want, too.  So, would you please consider supporting us by taking about 3 minutes of your time?  It really is a huge help.
Also, you might want to check out "Why Support CARM?"
  • Thanks for support - For those of you who have been supporting CARM, thank you.  We sincerely appreciate every dollar that comes in.  Again, thank you....really... thank you.

From Matt Slick

  • Radio shows and Catholic Apologist - Dr. Sungenis is a world class apologist for the Catholic faith.  Ken, who works with CARM, arranged to have him on as a guest.  I must say that our first encounter was not what I expected.  Dr. Sungenis is very good at what he does and, honestly, I wasn't prepared enough.  The second week, it was a bit more of the same.  But, by the third week (consecutive Mondays), I was prepared, knew where he was going, and was ready. It was a much more productive encounter and Dr. Sungenis repeated asked to change the subject as the show went on.  Long story short:  Roman Catholicism teaches salvation by faith and works -- works, they say, that are done under God's grace.  You cannot be saved without those works, so they are necessary, but at the same time don't "earn" salvation...even though salvation is merited by your works!  Make sense?  Well, when I was preparing for a class I'm teaching on Mormonism, I found some interesting quotes.  Check out this comparison.
    • "If any one saith, that by faith alone the impious is justified; in such wise as to mean, that nothing else is required to co-operate in order to the obtaining the grace of Justification, and that it is not in any way necessary, that he be prepared and disposed by the movement of his own will; let him be anathema" (Roman Catholic, Council of Trent, Canons on Justification, Canon 9).
      • "All that we can do for ourselves we are required to do. We must do our own repenting; we are required to obey every commandment and live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. If we will do this, then we are freed from the consequences of our own sins. The plan of salvation is based on this foundation. No man can be saved without complying with these laws" (Mormon President Joseph Fielding Smith, The Way to Perfection, p.172).
    • "If any one saith, that man is truly absolved from his sins and justified, because he assuredly believed himself absolved and justified; or, that no one is truly justified but he who believes himself justified; and that, by this faith alone, absolution and justification are effected; let him be anathema." (Roman Catholic, Council of Trent, Canons on Justification, Canon 14)
      • One of the most fallacious doctrines originated by Satan and propounded by man is that man is saved alone by the grace of God; that belief in Jesus Christ alone is all that is needed for salvation," (Miracle of Forgiveness, p. 206, Spencer W. Kimball who was the 12th President of the Mormon Church).
  • Released new articles - In light of my discussions with Dr. Sungenis, I have released three articles on Tradition (  Also, to my utter delight, I found on my computer an electronic file of the Anti-Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers.  It is public domain so I have been converting some of the files to articles on CARM for linking.  Yes!  This will come in very handy when dealing with Roman Catholic Tradition and, later, with Eastern Orthodox Tradition.  Lots more articles on Roman Catholicism are now in the works including the Assumption of Mary, The Church Fathers and Tradition, The Church Fathers and Sola Scriptura, and more.
  • Need a car - I figured it was worth a try.  Does anyone have a vehicle they'd like to donate to CARM or sell cheap to myself?   We need something that is mechanically sound; and, if it isn't too much to ask, doesn't look like it's been tossed around by a tornado.  So, if that rings a bell with you, please contact me at  Thanks.

Love and Hate Mail

  • I would like to thank each and everyone of you who work for CARM as you have always been a big help to me when I needed it, and would like to send all my best wishes and blessings to you in our lord Jesus Christ. God bless Thank you Gary
  • In reference to your "guest" on Monday July 12th, as I listened to him talk in circles I became so dizzy, I fell off of my chair three times! In regards to him talking about our good works earning us justification I have actually used a stopwatch to time my "righteousness before GOD" and in over 30 years of service to the KING my personal best is "5 seconds" (it was actually 4.6 but I rounded up). I pray the poor gentleman will allow you to lead him to CHRIST next time he calls. Keep up the great work of speaking the TRUTH of our LORD and SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST!!!
  • Just wanted to thank you for putting together a solid and informative website. You get a lot of hateful messages so I thought I would send you a nice one. God bless, Dan
  • Matt, I've been unable to work for five years, and I felt my life had no more meaning or purpose. I thought I was getting too old to do anything meaningful for the Lord; in fact, I became extremely depressed about my life. The only thing that I would find joy and real interest in is apologetics, and especially your program. I have some of your broadcasts that I have saved and listen to over and over--you truly inspire me, Matt! So, I prayed and asked God if it is His will for me to learn apologetics, to lead me and show me His direction...He answered me tonight when I read your most gracious generous response to my letter! I don't know how to say "thank you" that would properly express my deep and sincere appreciation. But I will send money to help your ministry needs as I am able--you can count on that! And I will be praying for God to meet ALL your needs and bless you abundantly. Paulette
  • Thank you for sharing. I am pleased to see you are on youtube now. I often refer others to your site. I understand what you are talking about concerning Mormons. My brother married a Mormon from Utah. Praying for the labour you have done will bear much fruit someday. Grace and Peace in Christ, Ann
  • Hey Matt, I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy watching CARM Videos on Youtube and appreciate people like you along with Dr. James White defending our faith and most importantly defending our beautiful & precious King Jesus Christ! Keep it up brother and never stop serving God in this way. Brother in Christ, Gary

  • This is Brian from, It was very sad to see, but your statement of faith which is heresy in itself, is in opposition to the Historic orthodox Christian faith big-time!. I don't know who did this, but it is not Biblical, and I am going to warn others about you. Regards, Brian
  • Liar, u suck!!!
  • You teach the abominable doctrines of men. Ie: rapture a new addition to christianity in the early 1700's that never was or is a part of the Christian church. You teach that a pastor leads the church rather than as Paul did a plurality of elders (no lead man). You have a beautiful and well constructed website but many false teachings and corruption of scripture. A typical man taught mixture not a Spirit led dissertation. You teach all the doctrines of men. You do list the cults correctly as such but you clearly are led by the teaching of men not the Holy Spirit. It is clear you learn from the logos software with its false and misleading information and not at the feet of the Lord and His Holy Spirit.
  • You error is you way of thinking... totally onesided, your way or no way. Christ never said to pray to him or even pray in his name. He gave the example " Our Father, Who are in Heaven. Christ never mentioned the Christian religion, nor did he begin it. Peter and Paul did and both stemmed from the Roman Catholic Church you persistently judge. All religions have their condemnations as does your own; and I am sure you are one of the seven... If not, then you are a newly created religion stemming away from the original churches, even more farfectched that the first. Get real... open the box and let God breathe. You are choking him out in your narrow interpretations.
