CARM Newsletter 9-11-2014

by Matt Slick

  • Update - The summer months have been extremely difficult in several ways. CARM suffered financially, and we've had to lay off two people for a month. In addition, my wife and I had a personal tragedy. On July 2 we traveled to help her brother Ray move since he was selling his house in Park City, Utah. He really needed our help because he had open heart surgery the previous year and has another surgery pending (8/22). Three years prior, his wife (Agnes) had a stroke and she is basically incapacitated. Their only son has autism and isn't much help in doing things. And, to top it all off, the second day we were there, their daughter committed suicide by lighting herself on fire. Needless to say, this was devastating. It took a few days to regain our bearings (while we continued to pack things), and by God's grace many pieces fell into place, including a church that came out of nowhere and helped us arrange the funeral service (which I led) and we held at their facility. It was difficult. A week later, my wife and I traveled to San Francisco to take our daughter to the airport since she was flying to Japan. We then went to Southern California and stayed with family and friends -- we found out that one friend's ex-wife just got into a really bad motorcycle accident and was going through surgery.  Anyway, towards the end of the month we were with a couple we've known for 30+ years and the night we were there, their uncle passed away. My wife and I left for home the next day, and when I got home I began working again right away.
There has been so much to do and so little time to do it, but that's the nature of this ministry. Stress and strain is increasing, so I would really appreciate any and all prayers you might offer.
  • CARM Situation as it stands of 9/11.
    • 1200+ unread emails in two main CARM accounts and 2300+ unanswered questions in the questions email queue.
      • I cannot answer them all and many just never get addressed. This is why I get complaints that I don't answer people. Sorry.
    • Less than one months reserves in savings.
    • Last month, laid off two people for a month and cut one person's salary in half.
      • This may or may not continue depending on financial situation.
    • Radio show costs $2K a month for Boise and Salt Lake City.
      • When I mentioned possibly shutting down the show if support does not come in, I was barraged with emails asking me to keep it. I really do want to keep it going.
  • Radio Advertising Help - CARM is in need of a person to make phone calls in the Boise and Salt Lake City areas in order to raise advertising for the CARM radio show. We want to expand it into other markets, but we need advertising to do that. If you are interested in this position, please send your resume to We don't have a lot of money, but we can commit to a little bit and see how it goes. If that sounds interesting, please contact me. You will need to be organized, have good phone conversation skills, keep records, and report to me, Matt Slick. Please, only serious inquiries, okay? Pray about it first.
  • Seminar Inquiry - I have been thinking about doing a special seminar here in Boise, Idaho. It would be for the purpose of training people in theology, logic, apologetics, etc. It would lead to certification so the attendees can teach CARM material at their churches (slides, manuals, etc.). Here's how it would work. People would fly in to Boise, Idaho. They would have to purchase a manual beforehand. There would be material to read before they got here. They would have to provide their own transportation, housing, and food. There would be a test where people either pass or fail. If they pass, they are certified to teach the CARM material in their churches. If they don't pass, no certification. If this is something you would seriously consider attending please email me at and paste in this sentence, "Yes I would like to attend the Boise Seminar," somewhere in the text of your email. It will then filter into a folder so I can see the response level as I consider doing this or not. Thanks.
  • Israel Trip - We are heading to Israel next year for a Bible lands tour. I did it last year and was thoroughly satisfied with how great the trip was. We went to the seven churches of revelation in Turkey, a surprisingly pleasant extension. When we got to Israel, we had the great privilege of seeing so many of the things that are mentioned in the Bible. I am most definitely looking forward to going back. If you'd like to join us, just go to
    It is an awesome trip.
  • Got suggestions? - Do you have any suggestions for CARM? We want to know what you think. Please help us out by emailing us at to submit suggestions. Now is the time since we are in the redesign process of CARM and, as we make plans, we want to improve in areas which will matter to CARM's readers.
  • How to woo and win women by being an obnoxious jerk - Years ago I wrote a humor book and never did anything with it. So, in order to teach myself how to do online publishing I used it as a practice piece. If you are interested in checking it out go to
