Is hell real?

by | Dec 2, 2022 | Questions, Other

Is hell real? Yes, it is. But a lot of people deny its existence. A lot of people think that hell is here on earth. Some believe that when we die, we stop existing. But others who trust in the Bible acknowledge that it is a real place. So what is hell? It is the place of future, eternal punishment where the unrepentant, wicked go forever. It is described in the Bible in many places in different ways.

  1. Fire
    1. Matthew 13:42, “and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
    2. Matthew 25:41, “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels.”
  2. Lake of Fire
    1. Revelation 19:20, “And the beast was seized, and with him, the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone.”
    2. Revelation 21:8, “But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
  3. Eternal torment
    1. Matthew 3:12, “His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
    2. Revelation 14:10, “he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed in full strength in the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.”

There are many such verses in the Bible, but these should be sufficient to convey the idea that according to the Scriptures, hell is real.

The Gospel that saves you from hell

We are all sinners. We have all done things wrong before God. And God is holy. He must deal with those who have sinned against Him. If He did not, then He would be permitting evil to occur without dealing with it. That would be wrong. So, we all deserve to be separated from Him because of our sins against Him. Nevertheless, God provided a way for us to be saved from His righteous judgment.

In order to be saved from the hell that awaits so many, we must put our trust in Jesus Christ, who is God in flesh (John 11:1, 14), and believe that what He did on the cross was die for our sins (1 Pet. 2:24). In other words, He did what we could not. He lived the Law perfectly (1 Pet. 2:22) and then went to the cross to die for us – and rose from the dead, three days later in the same body He died in (John 2:19-21), though it was a glorified body (1 Cor. 15:45-55). So, since Jesus is God in flesh and He did everything necessary, our part is to believe and be made right before God by our faith in what Christ did (Philippians 3:9; Romans 3:28; 4:1-6).

Then, you must seek to follow Him and live for Him. You must turn from your sin and seek Christ every day. This is the only way to be saved from your sins and saved from the damnation that will come upon all who do not accept what God Himself is provided.
