Where is the devil right now?

by | Nov 16, 2022 | Demons, Questions

Where is the devil right now? Is he on earth? Is he in heaven? Or can he move back and forth between them? The Bible does not tell us exactly where he is, but we can conclude that he’s present here on earth. since he tempted Jesus in Jerusalem (Matt. 4:1-3) and prowls around in this world to destroy people (1 Pet. 5:8). Furthermore, he is not everywhere all the time, being a created being, he is limited in his location. Therefore, he can only be in one place at a time. The Bible tells us that he was in heaven before he fell into sin (Job 1:6; Isaiah 14:12-15; 1 John 3:8), and we also know that he has access to earth (1 Pet. 4:8). Let’s take a look look at some scripture.Where is the devil

  1. Gen. 3:1, “Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, ‘Indeed, has God said, “You shall not eat from any tree of the garden”?  The serpent was the devil per Rev. 12:9
  2. Job 1:6, “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them.”
  3. Isaiah 14:12–15, “How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations! 13 But you said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, And I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north. 14 ‘I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’ 15 Nevertheless, you will be thrust down to Sheol, To the recesses of the pit.”
  4. Matt. 4:1–3, “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to Him, ‘If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.'”
  5. Luke 10:18, “And He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning.”
  6. 1 Pet. 5:8, “Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
  7. Rev. 12:4, “And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.”

So we can see that the devil existed in heaven before he sinned (Isaiah 14:12-15). After his rebellion, he came before the presence of God (Job 1:6). But Satan tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden (Gen. 3:1) and also when he tempted Jesus in Jerusalem (Matt. 4:1-3). Furthermore, he is on earth as well since he “prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Pet. 5:8). So, I conclude that Satan is in this world, our earthly dwelling, and not in heaven since Jesus said he saw Satan fall from heaven (Luke 10:18) in the Old Testament says that Satan fell from heaven (Isaiah 14:12-15).

Satan has fallen angels that work with him

But sometimes people wonder if the devil is localized in one spot at a time. Afterall, how come he can, apparently, seem to be everywhere? First of all, Satan has demonic forces that are helping him since one-third of the angels fell (Rev. 12:4). But also, the angels are very powerful spirits. We don’t know what their limitations are, so it is certainly possible that they could move quickly between different locations and appear to be more “present” than they actually are.

Conclusion

Satan appears to be restricted to this world since he was cast out of heaven. But logically, it does necessitate he can’t go back to heaven to appear before God as occurred in Job. 1:6. I don’t know of any Scripture that says he cannot visit there, especially since Job 1:6 talks about him. Before God who dwells in heaven. But primarily, it appears that he is alive and active here on earth, increasing evil is seeking to undermine.
