What is virtue signaling?

by | Feb 5, 2021 | Social Justice, Secular Issues

Virtue Signaling is the practice of publicly displaying politically correct opinions, morals, and attitudes, often to gain approval from others. The attitudes can be against racism and discrimination but also being pro-homosexual, pro-LGBTQ, etc. The virtual signaling is in regards to fluid morality and attitudes.  Virtual signaling can take many forms, such as putting on a Covid face-mask before going on television, kneeling in prayer so it can be photographed, being seen with minorities, etc.

Virtue Signaling

Virtual Signalling is “the sharing of one’s point of view on a social or political issue, often on social media, in order to garner praise or acknowledgment of one’s righteousness from others who share that point of view, or to passively rebuke those who do not.” https://www.dictionary.com/browse/virtue-signaling

Virtual signaling is in the Bible, and it is seen as being hypocritical. Consider the following sayings from Jesus.

  • Matthew 6:2, “So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.”
  • Matthew 6:6, “But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.”
  • Mark 12:38–40, “In His teaching He was saying: ‘Beware of the scribes who like to walk around in long robes, and like respectful greetings in the market places, 39 and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, 40 who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers; these will receive greater condemnation.”

As you can see, virtual signaling is a form of hypocrisy, at least from the scriptural perspective. We cannot look into people’s hearts and tell you what they are thinking with the motives are. However, Scripture tells us that her work should be consistent, her attitude is godly, and her motives to please the Lord. If we virtue signaling, then we are seeking the praise of people consider the praise of God. Of course, this is biblical and ultimately is a secular idea that is self-serving and, therefore, a form of hypocrisy. People should avoid virtue signaling.
