What else are angels called in the Bible?

Angels are referred to by different names, titles, and phrases in the Bible.  They are created beings who are spirit, not flesh, though they can take physical form for a while. There is a structure, a hierarchy of angelic forces, some good and some bad. Following is a list of terms dealing with angels in the Bible.

  1. Abaddon (Proper Name), Rev. 9:11, “They have as king over them, the angel of the abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in the Greek he has the name Apollyon.”
  2. Angel of His presence, Isaiah 63:9, “In all their affliction He was afflicted, and the angel of His presence saved them. In His love and in His mercy He redeemed them; and He lifted them and carried them all the days of old.”
  3. Angel of the Lord, Matt. 1:20, “But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for that which has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.”  See also, Luke 1:11; Acts 5:19; 8:26
  4. Angels of God, Genesis 32:1, “Now as Jacob went on his way, the angels of God met him.”
  5. Archangels, 1 Thessalonians 4:16, “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.”
  6. Cherubim, Genesis 3:34, “So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.”
  7. Gabriel (Proper Name), Luke 1:19, “And the angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God; and I have been sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news.”
  8. Heavenly Host, Luke 2:13-14, “And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”  See also Neh. 9:6; Col. 1:16
  9. Lucifer, Isaiah 14:12, “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!” (KJV).
  10. Michael (Proper Name), Jude 9, “But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil and argued about the body of Moses, did not dare pronounce against him a railing judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.”
  11. Morning Stars, Job 38:7, “When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?”
  12. Principalities, Romans 8:38, “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers.”
  13. Rulers and Authorities, Eph. 3:10, “in order that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places.”  See also Colossians 1:16
  14. Satan, Mark 1:13, “And He was in the wilderness forty days being tempted by Satan; and He was with the wild beasts, and the angels were ministering to Him.”
  15. Seraphim, Isaiah 6:2, “Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings; with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.”
  16. Seven Stars, Revelation 1:20, “As for the mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.”
  17. Sons of God, Job 1:6, “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.”
  18. Star of the Morning, Isaiah 14:12, “How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations!”
  19. Watchers, Daniel 4:17, “This sentence is by the decree of the angelic watchers, and the decision is a command of the holy ones, in order that the living may know that the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind, and bestows it on whom He wishes, and sets over it the lowliest of men.”
  20. Wormwood (Possible Name), Rev. 8:11, “and the name of the star is called Wormwood; and a third of the waters became wormwood; and many men died from the waters because they were made bitter.”
