What does the destruction of people mean according to the New Testament

by | Oct 11, 2018 | Annihilationism, Minor Groups & Issues

Those who hold to conditional immortality of the Christian and the annihilation of the wicked say that the generic reference to the “destruction” of the wicked means they don’t exist anymore – at least when it comes to the final judgment.  So, what does the New Testament teach about the destruction of the people?

There are many Greek words that are translated into the English destroy, destruction, destroyed, perish, perished, perishing, lost, etc. So, since the NASB is a good translation that seeks to be as literal as possible, I collected all the of those verses rendered into the English that used those words. I have provided a large table at the end of this article with the various Greek words examined in context. I summarized the findings in the outline below. This is what I found.

When the New Testament speaks of the destruction of people it speaks in several different senses. There are verses that are not clear regarding the nature of the destruction, which means that the destruction spoken of can have possible logical options such as physical death, spiritual death, or nonexistence. Sometimes the New Testament mentions people dying physically (Matt. 8:25; Mark 4:38; Luke 8:24; Acts 5:37, etc.) and suffering spiritual destruction (Matt. 7:13; Rom. 9:22; Heb. 10:39, etc.), but the exact meaning of the destruction is not specified. People also perish (John 3:16; 10:28; 1 Cor. 1:18, 2 Cor. 2:15, etc.), but, exactly what form that ‘perishing’ is (continued suffering or nonexistence), is not specified. The same lack of specificity sometimes occurs with being lost where the ‘lost/destroyed’ condition of the person can be physical or spiritual (Matt. 10:39; Mark 8:35; Luke 17:33; Acts 3:23, etc.). Then there are instances where the lost are still there (John 6:39; Luke 15:24; 19:10). We find that the Pharisees wanted to destroy Jesus but Jesus would still exist in both the intermediate state and the eternal afterlife (Matt. 2:13; 12:14; 27:20; Mark 3:6; 11:18; Luke 19:47). So, this destruction of a person cannot mean nonexistence. Likewise, the demons spoke of their own destruction (Mark 1:24; Luke 4:34), but that destruction also must mean continued existence under punishment since angels don’t die ( Luke 20:36 ). So, we find that in the New Testament, being destroyed, perishing, can have a variety of meanings depending on the context. Unfortunately, the annihilationists routinely beg the question by assuming that when the scriptures speak of a person being destroyed, they assume it means they don’t exist anymore either in the intermediate state or at the final judgment. But, this is unwarranted and reveals their prejudicial interpretations not necessarily warranted by Scripture.
