I am trying to be a Christian

by | Oct 19, 2009 | Answers for Seekers, Christian Theology

You don’t try to be Christian. You are either Christian or not. You have either trusted in Christ and are redeemed or we have not trusted in Christ and are not redeemed. Those who “try” to be a Christian are those who are in cults and false religious systems where being a Christian means to perform rituals, ceremonies, and follow a bunch of rules. That is not what makes someone a Christian.  Instead, you become a Christian by trusting in Jesus and His sacrifice for you on the cross. There is no “trying” involved. If you trust Jesus, if you ask Him to forgive you of your sins and be your Savior, then you are a Christian. It is living like a Christian after you’ve become one, that is difficult.

If you believe that in order to become a Christian you must be good, then you misunderstand or don’t have a good grasp of salvation. A Christian is a Christian by the gift of God (Rom. 6:23), not the work of man (Eph. 2:8-9). There is nothing you can do to earn salvation or keep salvation. It is simply something God freely gives you. If you want it, confess your sins, repent, turn to God, and trust Jesus as your only Savior. Then, and only then, will you become a Christian.

Of course, I am not saying that it’s some empty belief that makes you a Christian then you can go sin all you want. Of course not. But the point is that we’re not Christian because of our actions. We are Christian because of our belief and trust in Jesus. Along with that belief comes regeneration which is a change inside of us (2 Cor. 5:17). And because of that change, we want to turn away from what is bad and follow Jesus.

So, you either have faith in Christ or you don’t. And, if you do trust in Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, you then try to live according to His teachings.
