There is no such thing as sin

by | Oct 18, 2009 | Answers for Seekers, Christian Theology

If someone were to say that there is no such thing as sin, how would they know that is true? Biblically speaking, sin exists because God exists. In other words, when you do what is contrary to God’s will, that is sin. So, to say there’s no such thing as sin would also be saying that God does not exist. But, how does anyone know that God does not exist? A person can “believe” that God does not exist, but that doesn’t mean there is no God. There are all kinds of arguments for God’s existence and they should be examined carefully. But, is not proof that is the issue with a lot of people. Instead, it is persuasion. I like to say that proof is different than persuasion.

Nevertheless, sin is doing what is wrong before God, it is breaking his law (1 John 3:4). If there is a God, then it makes sense to say that he is the Lawgiver, the one who reveals what is right and wrong like, “do not murder, do not steal,” etc. Are you willing to bet your life that there is no God?  Are you absolutely sure that how you have behaved in this world will mean nothing when you face God in the next?

Think about it.  Saying there is no such thing as sin doesn’t mean there isn’t any.  Besides, if you have ever lied, or cheated, or stolen, then according to the Bible, you’ve sinned.

Also, if there is no sin, then there will be no judgment. And without judgment wickedness can prosper. Think about this. If they were two theoretical existences, one with God and one without God, which is better morally?  If there were no God, and people got away with doing things that were wrong, then in that worldview there will be no punishment. We would have to ask if it’s okay to get away with what is wrong.  But people realize that justice means that a murderer should be punished. But if there is no sin, and there is no God, then there is no future judgment. This would mean that in the know God worldview, injustice occurs all the time and most injustices will never be dealt with. So which is better? Is it better to live in a world where justice is accomplished or where it is ignored?
