What makes you think the Bible is the word of God?

by | Oct 19, 2009 | Answers for Seekers, Christian Theology

The Bible is the word of God because of many reasons. But, one of the most important things is prophecy: The Old Testament was written before Jesus was ever born. The New Testament was written by the men who knew Jesus, who walked with Him, ate with Him, and learned from Him. In the O.T. there are prophecies concerning His birthplace (Micah 5:1-2), that He would be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14), that He would be rejected by His own people (Isaiah 53:3), that He would be betrayed by a close friend (Psalm 41:9), that He would die by having His hands and feet pierced (Psalm 22:16-18), and that He would rise from the dead (Psalm 16:10, 49:15). In the N.T. all these prophecies, and many more, are fulfilled by Jesus. Now, this is the question you must answer: “If the Bible is not inspired from God, then why does it have so many fulfilled prophecies?” How is that possible if the Bible were not from God?

Eyewitnesses wrote the Bible

The eyewitnesses wrote would they saw. Matthew, John, Paul, Peter, and Jude were eyewitnesses of what they saw regarding Jesus. Their lives were changed not because of what they simply believed. It was because of what they saw. Their writings have been very well preserved from ancient times. No other ancient document even begins to approach the accuracy and reliability of the copying of the original documents. So, the eyewitnesses or another reason that the Bible is the word of God because they recorded what they saw Christ do.

Jesus

Jesus is the most unique person in history. Not only did he fulfilled prophecy, but he raised people from the dead and rose from the dead himself. There been many throughout history who have claimed to speak for God. But only Jesus rose from the dead after three days. It is within those pages that we see the miraculous, read of history, see the flow of God’s work throughout time, and encounter the person of Jesus. He is unique and he affirmed the Old Testament as well as called the New Testament writers to follow him and represent him. Therefore, when they wrote the New Testament, there were following the commands of Christ.

Wisdom

Wisdom: The Bible is full of the greatest truths about man and God, sin, and salvation. The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5) is beautiful in its wisdom, humility, and love. The Psalms are incredible poetry of great depth and beauty. The N.T. epistles are great descriptions of love, forgiveness, longsuffering, kindness, etc. (Even if you don’t want to become a Christian, studying the truth God has revealed in the Bible will greatly help you in your life.) The aim is not to merely get the person to use the Bible as a guide to good living, but to encourage him to read it. This way, he will at least be reading the Word of God, and be that much closer to conversion, because God’s Word will accomplish what He wants it to (Isaiah 55:11).
