Argument against God’s existence using location outside of the universe

by | Jul 30, 2013 | Atheism, Secular Issues

An atheist said he could demonstrate that God could not be the creator of the universe.  I have attempted to recall his arguments to the best of my ability.  He said in order for God to exist, he would have to exist in a location.  That would mean that such a location would have to be part of the universe since it is a “location;” and you can’t have a location outside of the universe.  So, it doesn’t make sense to say that God exists outside of the “universe of locations,” while he himself is in a location.  Therefore, God cannot be the creator of the universe.

The first problem with this argument is that it assumes God exists in a location the same way we do.  This is an assumption that cannot be validated.  Second, a location is in reference to another object or objects.  I am located in my chair, in my house, in Idaho.  You are located somewhere else.  Location deals with dimensionality and relationship to other objects. But, if there is only one object in all existence, how can it have a location?  Third, the analogy of location, which we are familiar within our experience and which is restricted to this universe, cannot be applied to the biblical God who is the creator of the universe and is not limited to a location within it or outside of it.

So, the argument fails to show that God cannot be the creator of the universe.
