Mormonism and let us make man in our image

by | Dec 2, 2008 | Defending the Faith, Apologetics

Email:  You say that Mormonism teaches that god is in the form of a man, but don’t all Christian religions believe the Oldimage Testament? I just looked up the scripture in Gen. 1:26 where it says, “and God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.”

Response:  Mormons almost universally quote this verse in support of their doctrine. But it is unfortunate that they do since they use the Bible whenever it supports their view but ignore it when it doesn’t. We can demonstrate this by looking at two very important Scriptures regarding the image of God.

  • John 4:24, “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
  • Luke 24:39, “See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”

We can see that Jesus says God is spirit. Of course, Jesus is referring to the Father. Furthermore, in Luke, Jesus says that spirit does not have flesh and bones. Therefore, we can conclude that since God is spirit and spirit does not have flesh and bones, then it is not possible to use Gen. 1:26 to say that God has a body of flesh and bones.
