neanderthalIn the theory of evolution, the Neanderthal is supposed to be an extinct species that preceded Homo sapiens. Some scientists think Neanderthals are precursors to humans, and others do not. Apparently they coexisted with early humans but did not interbreed with them. The Neanderthals were supposed to have lived from approximately 120,000 to 35,000 years ago in Western Asia and Northern Africa.

Proposed Evolutionary Timeline Leading to Humans

  • Homo Sapiens, present
  • Homo Neanderthalensis, 200,00 years ago
  • Homo Rhodesiensis, 500,000 years ago
  • Homo Heidelbergensis, 600,000 years ago
  • Homo Erectus, 1 million years ago
  • Homo Ergaster, 1.7 million years ago
  • Paranthropus Boisei, 1.4 to 2.3 million years ago
  • Homo Habilis, 2.5 million years ago
  • Australopithecus Deyiremeda, 3.4 million years ago
  • Australopithecus Afarensis, 3.9 to 2.9 million years ago
  • Kenyanthropus platyops, 3.5 million years ago
  • Sahelanthropus tchadensis, 6 to 7 million years ago
