Epicureanism is a philosophical perspective developed by Epicurus (approx. 300 B.C.) that teaches that the avoidance of pain and the increase of happiness are the highest good. He taught that attaining such pleasure must be in moderation. The term is also used to describe a high level of sophistication in tastes, such as art, food, etc.
