Damnation – False View

Damnation – False View

  • BIBLE (Correct): Damnation is the righteous condemnation of God upon the sinner who has not been redeemed by faith, in the sacrifice of Christ. All such judgment has been given to Christ.
    • “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God,” (John 3:18).
    • “For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son,” (John 5:22).
    • “But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,” (Rom. 2:5).
  • Christian Science: There is no judgment that leads to eternal damnation since sin is an illusion and Jesus did not die to pay the legal debt to God.
    • The demand and example of Jesus were not from beneath. Are frozen dogmas, persistent persecution, and the doctrine of eternal damnation, from above?” (No and Yes, p. 14, Mary Baker Eddy).

  • Islam: Damnation is an eternal judgment of condemnation where those who were not true Muslims go to suffer fire and boiling water.
    • “Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price will have no share in the Hereafter, and Allah will not speak to them or look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them; and they will have a painful punishment,” (Quran 3:77).
    • “And those who disbelieve and deny Our signs–those will be companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally,” (Quran 2:39).
    • “On the Day We will say to Hell, “Have you been filled?” and it will say, “Are there some more,” (Quran 50:30).
    • “Do they not know that whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger–that for him is the fire of Hell, wherein he will abide eternally? That is the great disgrace,” (Quran 9:63).
    • This [is so]. But indeed, for the transgressors is an evil place of return–56 Hell, which they will [enter to] burn, and wretched is the resting place. 57 This–so let them taste it–is scalding water and [foul] purulence,” (Quran 38:55-57).
    • “Their garments of liquid pitch and their faces covered by the Fire,” (Quran 14:50), (Quran 3:77).

  • Jehovah’s Witnesses: Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that damnation is annihilation without any conscious torment after death. It is simply non-existence.
    • “where the King James Version mentions God’s destroying “both soul and body in hell,” the inherent idea is destroying in death, not in eternal suffering,” (Watchtower 4/15/93, p. 7).
    • “Do you sincerely believe that the teaching of eternal damnation in hell draws people to God? Hardly. In the minds of just and loving people, it is a repelling thought!” (Watchtower 6/1/20, p. 6).

  • LDS – Mormonism: Damnation has different meanings, but it generally means a failure to meet the highest exaltation to Godhead in the celestial kingdom. There is a sense in which damnation is also a severe punishment in the afterlife. But, according to Mormonism, total, complete, and eternal damnation is only for the devil and his angels.
    • “What is damnation? It is being barred, or denied privileges of progression, because of failure to comply with law. All who fail to enter into the celestial kingdom are damned, or stopped in their progression, but they will enter into some other glory which they are entitled to receive,” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation 2:227).
    • “They are they who are the sons of perdition, of whom I say that it had been better for them never to have been born; 33 For they are vessels of wrath, doomed to suffer the wrath of God, with the devil and his angels in eternity; 34 Concerning whom I have said there is no forgiveness in this world nor in the world to come,” (D&C 76:32-34).
    • “Ultimate and total damnation comes only to the devil and his angels, who rebelled in the first estate, and to the sons of perdition, who are damned eternally and denied entrance into any kingdom of glory hereafter,” (D&C 76:32-34).
    • “For behold, I reveal unto you a new and an everlasting covenant; and if ye abide not that covenant, then are ye damned; for no one can reject this covenant and be permitted to enter into my glory,” (D&C 132:4).

  • New Age Movement: There is no concept of damnation in the New Age Movement that equates with Christianity. However, it would be considered a place of self-denial, self-delusion that can occur now or after death and last for as long as the person refuses to believe the truth of his own divinity and divinity of others.

  • Roman Catholicism: Damnation is eternal separation from God in hell, the same as biblical revelation. However, it is the result of those who have not earned salvation by obtaining it through baptism, works, and sacraments.
    • ” . . . so that all men may attain salvation through faith, Baptism and the observance of the Commandments,” (CCC, 2068).
    • “This sacrament of Penance is necessary for salvation for those who have fallen after Baptism, just as Baptism is necessary for salvation for those who have not yet been reborn,” (CCC 980).
