To transliterate is to use the alphabet of a language to produce the sounds of another language, and thereby pronounce it. For example, the first few words of John 1:1 in Greek are εν αρχη ην ο λογος which is pronounced (transliterated) as “en arche ane ho logos” which in English is “In the beginning was the word . . ”
