Is it possible to be queer, homosexual, LGBT, and be a Christian? There are two different ways in which the question can be understood and answered. One is yes and the other is no. Let me explain.
Homosexuality/LGBT is sinful because it goes against the nature of God. A person cannot be a true Christian and also be queer, homosexual, LGBT if that person does not see these things as sinful, but instead practices them and supports them. The promotion of such sins would be in direct contradiction to Scripture. Therefore, in this sense, a person could not be both a Christian and also queer, homosexual, LGBT.
On the other hand, a person can be a true Christian and also be queer, homosexual, LGBT if we understand the phrase “be queer, homosexual, LGBT,” to mean that the person struggles with same-sex attraction, but knows they are sinful and is struggling against them. In this last sense, the person still has those attractions but recognizes that they are ungodly and sinful and works towards resisting them.
It is similar to asking if a person can be a sinner and still be a Christian. In one sense, yes, and in another sense, no. Yes, a person can be a sinner and still be a Christian because all Christians are sinners even though they are warring against their sin and seeking to avoid it.
Romans 7:19–25, “For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20 But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 21 I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22 For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, 23 but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.”
Can One Embrace and Celebrate Being LGBT and Still Be A Christian?
But now, on the other hand, if a person does not have any sense of guilt about his sin and is seeking to live in it then that is evidence is not a true Christian. If one embraces an LGBT self-identity as a positive good and has no conviction of their sin in this matter, one would be hard-pressed to call such a person a Christian.
A true Christian is someone who is regenerate, changed on the inside. But being changed, being born again (John 3:3-8; 2 Cor. 5:17), does not mean that all of our temptations and past sinful habits instantly disappear. All Christians suffer from the war within them to do what is right and resist what is wrong. This struggle is is a sign of being a true Christian. If we were to say that someone cannot be a true Christian who has homosexual tendencies that he is resisting, then we must also say that a person cannot be a true Christian if he had the tendency to lust over someone of the opposite sex. If, in that case, a person was lusting, and he knew it was sinful and was seeking repentance, then that is a sign of being regenerate.
Conclusion
Depending on how the question is asked, the answer to whether or not a person can be homosexual, queer, LGBT, and also be a Christian can be yes or no. Yes, if they recognize that their sinful tendencies and desires are against Scripture and are seeking repentance but are still struggling with those old temptations. On the other hand, they could not be a true Christian if they did not feel that conviction and worked to promote those sins.
