On April 29, 2013, Chris Broussard, a basketball analyst for ESPN, voiced his opinion about homosexuality as it related to Jason Collins, a friend of his who is a basketball player and has announced that he is gay. Of course, social media is skewering him for voicing his opinion and, of course, there is the possibility he might be fired. What did he say? “I’m a Christian. I don’t agree with homosexuality. I think it is a sin as I think all sex outside of marriage between a man and a woman is. And LZ knows that. He and I have played on basketball teams together for several years. We’ve gone out had lunch together. We’ve had good conversations, good laughs together. He knows where I stand and I know where he stands. I don’t, you know, criticize him. He doesn’t criticize me and call me a bigot, call me ignorant, call me intolerant. And now that I, I hear, and talking to some people around the league, they’re a lot of Christians in the NBA and they don’t want to be just because they disagree with that lifestyle they don’t want to be viewed and called bigoted and intolerant and things like that and that’s what LZ was getting at. Uh, just like I may tolerate someone whose lifestyle I disagree with. He can tolerate me, my beliefs and he disagrees with my beliefs and my lifestyle. But true tolerance and acceptance is being able to handle that in with ma as mature adults and not criticize each other and call each other names. Personally, I, I don’t believe that you can live an openly homosexual lifestyle or an openly prema like premarital sex between heterosexuals. If you’re openly living that type of lifestyle then the Bible says you know them by their fruit. It says that you know that’s a sin. And if you’re openly living in unrepentant sin whatever it may be, not just homosexuality, adultery, fornication, premarital sex between heterosexuals, whatever it may be, I believe that’s walking in open rebellion to God and to Jesus Christ. So I would not characterize that person as a Christian cuz I don’t think the Bible would characterize them as a Christian.”

Chris, as a Christian American, stated his opinion that homosexuality is a sin – and he is correct. According to the Scriptures it is a sin (Leviticus 18:22; 20:13; Romans 1:26-28; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10). Good for him for having the courage to state his opinion on national TV. But, I have to ask, is Chris Broussard now in jeopardy of losing his job because he voiced an opinion that isn’t popular? It would seem so. Did he advocate violence? No. Did he mock and condemn his homosexual friend? No. Did he single out homosexuality as the only sin? No. So, if his job is threatened, then why? Perhaps it is because he voiced his opinion, an opinion that is not in lock-step with the leftist morality of our decaying society – the same society that advocates tolerance and acceptance, but attacks Christians and conservatives when they disagree with it. Here is a proposed tagline for the liberal left: “Tolerance for all, except for you bigots who don’t agree with us!”

Now, this isn’t an article about defending the biblical position on homosexuality. That is done here. Instead, this article is about supporting someone who has the right to express his opinion and not be fired by the politically correct intelligentsia. But what do we expect from a world where moral relativism is the norm, and accusations of bigotry are thrown out against anyone who doesn’t agree with the consensus of the morally decaying society at large? I expect exactly what is happening, attacks on his character, attacks on his faith, and calls for him to be fired.

Nevertheless, ESPN, which is owned by the ABC Network, should not fire Chris Broussard for expressing his opinion; nor should it discriminate against him because of it. He should be supported for his birthright, as a Christian American citizen, to express his opinion, right or wrong, popular or not. After all, we are supposed to be the country of the free, not the oppressed. Let’s have freedom reign. Let’s support the right of people to disagree peacefully, respectfully, and not be threatened with being fired for expressing an opinion that does not support homosexuality.
