If God knows what we will choose, then how can we have free will?

by | Dec 1, 2008 | Minor Groups & Issues, Open Theism

By definition, free will is the ability to make a choice that is not forced. God does not force us to choose things.  He is not in our brain, making us believe things that we don’t want to believe. If we freely choose something then we are actually freely choosing it because that’s what it means to freely choose something. On the other hand, if we were forced to choose something, then we are not responsible for what we did. It would be like someone forcing you to shoot someone, by having a person put his hand on your hand and forcing you to pull the trigger. You’re not responsible at that point.

If I were to place a bowl of ice cream and a bowl of rocks at the dinner table in front of my child, I know exactly which one my child will eat. Even though I knew exactly which one the child would need, knowing it did not remove the freedom of choice from my child.
