There is nothing in Scripture that suggests that Adam was created as an infant. If anything, the contrary is taught. Let’s take a look.

• Genesis 1:26-27, “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.  29 Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; 30 and to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to every thing that moves on the earth which has life, I have given every green plant for food”; and it was so.
• Genesis 2:7-8, 15-17, 20,24, “Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. 8 The LORD God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed…15 Then the LORD God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. 16 The LORD God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die….20 The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him…24 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.

The first mention of ‘man’ in the Bible refers to man generically, as both male and female (Gen. 1:26). The command of God to them is to be fruitful and multiply (v. 1:28), which is not something a baby could do. Later we see that God placed the man in the garden of Eden (Gen. 2:8). So the Scriptures call him a man, not a baby. Furthermore, in Gen. 2:16-17 the man is given a commandment to not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. This certainly does not fit admonitions given to a baby.  And, we see in Gen. 2:24 that marriage is introduced where “the man” is again mentioned. This, of course, implies maturity, not infancy.

Nothing in Genesis 1, 2, or 3 suggests that Adam was created as an infant. The pattern of God is to create things in maturity as we see in the created order where God sequentially makes the heavens and earth over six days. Each thing in the created order seems to be created in maturity, i.e., the sun, the moon, the stars, etc.  The earth, however, is formless and void and God places things on it. The reason the development occurs over six days is probably to demonstrate God’s creative order, logic, and to demonstrate how we are to rest, even as God did on the seventh day. That rest, ultimately speaks of Christ’s redemptive work.

Nevertheless, there is nothing in the text that implies that Adam was created as a baby.

The New Testament and the creation of Adam

• 1 Corinthians 15:45, “So also it is written, “The first MAN, Adam, BECAME A LIVING SOUL.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.”
• 1 Timothy 2:13, “For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.”

Nothing in the New Testament implies that Adam was created as an infant. If anything, Adam was created as a man who became a living soul. It would not be the case that Adam was created as a baby and then became a living soul when he matured into manhood.

So, God created Adam as a mature individual, not as a baby.
