Social Justice dictionary

The following is a list of some of the major terms used within social justice conversations.  It is wise to know what words mean in the context of the dialogues you might have with people when viewing newscasts, reading articles, etc.  Sources for these definitions are found among dictionary.com, sdfoundation.org, un.org, heritage.org, fedsoc.org, etc. In other articles, we delve into Social Justice and Christianity.

 

  1. Ableism – Discrimination that favors people who are able-bodied as compared to the disabled. It is prejudice against those with disabilities and favoring those who are typically healthy.
  2. Ageism – Prejudice against and oppression towards those who were either young or old in regards there value and ability in society.
  3. Asexuality – The self-identification of people who have no attraction or sexual desire towards other people.
  4. Biphobia – The irrational fear and depression of those who identify themselves as bisexual or have fluid sexuality.
  5. BLM – BLM is an acronym for Black Lives Matter, a hyper-leftist movement aimed at racial and sexual orientation equality even at the expense of religious freedom. It promotes socialism and LGBTQ in all areas of society.
  6. Boycotting – The practice of not buying a product in order to hurt a person or company financially and bring about change.
  7. Calling in – Speaking to someone privately about inappropriate action or opinion.
  8. Calling out – Speaking to someone publically about inappropriate action or opinion, generally using social media.
  9. Canceling – The attempt by a group of people to harm the reputation or livelihood of a person, product, or organization in response to a violation of not proper belief or action.
  10. Cisgender – A person who identifies with the same gender with which he or she is born.
  11. Cisgenderism – An attitude and practice of oppressing non-cisgender people.  The oppression of those who are LGBTQ by presupposing the superiority and normalcy of cisgender.
  12. Coming Out – The process by which an individual who associates as LGBTQ publicly acknowledges and celebrates their sexual orientation.
  13. Community Building – The practice of increasing intercommunication of individuals in a larger community, usually based upon common interests.
  14. Collective Learning – The accumulation, storage, and sharing of knowledge in a community, and across generations, that is found in the form of roles, routines, symbols, that are then used to guide future decisions.
  15. Critical Consciousness – Critical Consciousness is the approach of trying to discover and understand the underlying attitudes and concepts that lead to prejudices.
  16. Critical Race Theory, CRT – A broad social science approach to the study of race, racism, prejudice, and bias as they relate to society.
  17. Cultural Appropriation – The practice of using and taking over the culture, practices, and norms of a group of people from another culture. Generally, the term is used negatively.
  18. Discrimination – The practice of oppression and denying opportunity in privileges to a person or group of people based upon their race, sexual orientation, religion, social status, gender, etc.
  19. Ethnocentrism – The practice of judging another culture by one’s own cultural standards. It is the inherent belief that one’s own culture is superior to other cultures.
  20. Experiential Knowledge – Different ways of acquiring knowledge in the process of self-analysis and learning.
  21. Gay – The sexual and romantic attraction between members of the same biological sex.  It generally used for male-to-male attraction.
  22. Hate Group – A collection of individuals, usually as an organization, that intends to spread hatred and violence using lies upon other groups of people based on their sexual orientation, religion, race, or class.
  23. Homophobia – The fear and intolerance of those who identify with an attraction to members of the same biological sex.
  24. Intersectionality – The study of how race, gender, class, age, and sexuality create an interconnected system of oppression and discrimination towards an individual or group of people.
  25. Karen – A person, generally a white woman, who is seen as having an attitude of entitlement and expresses prejudiced views.
  26. LGBTQ – An acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer
  27. Prejudice – The negative attitude towards a person, ethnic group, religious affiliation, or race that is without foundation. It is negativity towards someone or something without experiencing it.
  28. Queer – A term used to describe a person who identifies with a sexual orientation that does not fit the norms of society.
  29. Race Consciousness – Race Consciousness is the self-awareness and acknowledgment of a person’s racist attitudes.
  30. Racial Quotas – The practice of forced diversity that requires numerical quotas based on minority status, race, sexual orientation, age, and gender in hiring,
  31. Racism – Discriminatory attitudes and practices against a person or persons based on a person’s race or ethnic group.
  32. Sexual Orientation – A person’s emotional, romantic, and sexual attraction to different people. Sexual orientation can include asexuality, bisexuality, heterosexuality, homosexuality, etc.
  33. Social justice – The term used to describe the equal distribution of opportunity, privilege, resources, and wealth within a society.
  34. Transgender – A person whose personal identity does not correspond with his or her biological sex with which they were born.
  35. White supremacy – The attitude that those of the caucasian ‘ white race’ is superior to all other races and should be in power and control of society.
  36. Woke – The condition of being aware of injustices in society. It is awareness of unpleasant truths regarding prejudices.
