What does it mean to be woke?

by | Jan 26, 2021 | Social Justice, Secular Issues

In social justice, the term woke means being socially aware of racism, ageism, social justice, white privilege, prejudice, etc.  The left uses it (but more frequently in African American communities) to signify being properly aware of those injustices. Stay WokeThe term “woke” began in the black community, where racism, police brutality, and prejudice were commonplace. Also, the couplet “stay woke” generally refers to intentionally remaining aware of these injustices.

“Stay woke became a watch word in parts of the black community for those who were self-aware, questioning the dominant paradigm and striving for something better.” https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/woke-meaning-origin

“#StayWoke often accompanied social media posts about police brutality, systematic racism and the industrial prison complex. #StayWoke reminds readers to look past the provided narrative, to examine their own privilege (or lack thereof). #StayWoke reminds readers that there is more than one reality to life in the United States.” https://www.bustle.com/articles/134893-what-does-woke-mean-theres-more-to-the-slang-term-than-you-think

One of the problems with being “woke” is that people might make it to judge other people. It is human nature to measure others by our own standard. And if you fail that standard, you’re not as good/aware as them. For example, the derogatory term “Karen” is sometimes used to refer to white women who are not properly “woke” and are benefiting from “white privilege.”  It can go too far.

An additional problem is found in the cancel culture. If you are not woke enough, then you can be attacked. Or, in other words, canceled. Someone who is not woke enough can be socially ridiculed for not holding to the politically correct view. And what about people who are just plain ignorant about what it means to be aware of prejudice and white privilege and all that sort of stuff? If they don’t hold the same standard of wokeness are they to be penalized?  Unfortunately, it has become a weapon of the left used to oppress and silent those who are not in alignment with “proper” secular thought.

“Woke has more recently been used as a term to criticise identity politics or to reference millennial “snowflake” attitudes. GMB presenter Piers Morgan slammed “woke idiots” who are campaigning to get 1978 film Grease banned on January 3, 2021. In light of the #metoo movement, Black Lives Matter and LGBTQIA rights and awareness, lots of viewers felt the film no longer has a place in today’s TV schedule.” https://www.the-sun.com/news/270341/woke-meaning-definition/

Christianity and being woke

Some aspects of the woke movement are good, especially when they coincide with Scripture. The Bible says to do good and seek justice (Isaiah 1:17), to fight for the rights of the less unfortunate (Proverbs 31:8), to not oppress people (Leviticus 19:13), to not be partial to the poor or the rich (Leviticus 19:15), to defend the rights of the afflicted (Proverbs 31:9), and to love your neighbor (Matthew 22:39).

However, we must make sure that we’re not trying to be socially aware, just for the sake of being socially aware. That is empty moralism. Instead, we need always to be aware that we are here to serve our Lord and Savior Jesus. Doing what’s right socially is good. But if it is not done for the glory of Jesus, that is self-seeking and legalistic. Instead, whatever we do, we should do for the glory of God.

“Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Cor. 10:31).
