Baptism

A list of Scripture on the topic of “Baptism” arranged in outline, topical order. Baptism is a covenant sign, a seal of the righteousness we have by faith. The word “baptism” and its Greek forms (baptizo, bapto, baptismos), is used in many different contexts in the Bible.

 

  1. Administration of Baptism in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
    1. Matthew 28:19, β€œGo therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”
  2. Equated with Circumcision
    1. Colossians 2:11-12, ” and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; 12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.”
  3. Importance of Baptism
    1. Acts 2:38, “And Peter said to them, “Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
  4. Miscellaneous
    1. John 4:1, “When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His disciples were).”
    2. Sanctioned by Christ.”
    3. Ephesians 4:5, “one Lord, one faith, one baptism.”
  5. Salvation before Baptism
    1. Acts 10:44-48, “While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. 45 And all the circumcised believers who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out upon the Gentiles also. 46 For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered, 47 “Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?” 48 And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days.
  6. Sanctioned by Christ

    2. Mark 3:13, “Then Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?” 15 But Jesus answering said to him, “Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.”Then he permitted Him.”
  7. Symbolic of Regeneration
    1. Romans 6:3, ” Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?”
