Prayer

by | Jun 4, 2010 | Bible Verses by Topic, The Bible

A list of Scripture on the topic of prayer arranged in an outline, topical order. The Bible tells us what prayer is, how to pray, to whom do we pray, and what it accomplishes.

  1. Acceptable Through Christ
    1. John 14:13, “And whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”
    2. John 15:16, “You did not choose Me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask of the Father in My name, He may give to you.”
    3. John 16:23, “And in that day you will ask Me no question. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you shall ask the Father for anything, He will give it to you in My name.”
  2. Accomplishes Much

    2. Father
      1. Ephesians 3:14, “For this reason, I bow my knees before the Father.”
    3. God
      1. Psalm 5:2, “Heed the sound of my cry for help, my King and my God, for to You do I pray.”
      2. Luke 6:12, “And it was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God.”

Luke 18:11-14, “The Pharisee stood and was praying thus to himself, β€˜God, I thank Thee that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax-gatherer. 12 β€˜I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’ 13 β€œBut the tax-gatherer, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, β€˜God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’ 14 β€œI tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, but he who humbles himself shall be exalted.”

  6. How to Pray

Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. 11 β€˜Give us this day our daily bread. 12 β€˜And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 β€˜And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.’”

I shall pray with the spirit and I shall pray with the mind also; I shall sing with the spirit and I shall sing with the mind also. 16 Otherwise if you bless in the spirit only, how will the one who fills the place of the ungifted say the β€œAmen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not know what you are saying? 17 For you are giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified.”
