Can God the Father give life without a God the Mother?

by | Aug 12, 2016 | Minor Groups & Issues, World Mission Society Church of God

The World Mission Society Church of God (WMSCOG) teaches that there are actually two Gods: God the Father and God the Mother.

“There is a definite reason God taught His disciples to call Him Father. The paternal title “Father” was used because there is surely an opposite maternal existence to God the Father. The Bible teaches there is also God our Mother,”1

Not only this, they claim that God the Father alone is incapable of giving us life. Eternal life cannot be obtained without God the Mother. For example, they state:

“In the book of Genesis, we see God give Adam the power to do everything. However, the one thing Adam could not do was give life. This is why he named his wife Eve, which means “life,” and called her “the mother all who live” since life only comes from a mother. Prophetically, God lets us know that even though God the Father exists, God the Mother is necessary for spiritual life—eternal life.”2

“The existence of a father naturally indicates there are children. Children can only have life if there is also a mother because it is the mother who gives birth,”3

“By promising eternal life ‘at the last day,’ Jesus was letting us know God the Mother, the giver of spiritual life, would appear in our time.”4

Their website is peppered with phrases like, “all life is given through mothers,” and when a pair of their members spoke to my wife and she told them she believes in the biblical gospel, they responded, “do you know about the female image of God?” To the WMSCOG, their alleged “God the Mother” is essential to giving life and saving our souls. On their view, there can be no gospel and no salvation without “God the Mother.” The Bible, however, has a different message:

“Just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so, the Son also gives life to whom He wishes,” (John 5:21).

“Jesus then said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven.  For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.’ Then they said to Him, ‘Lord, always give us this bread.’ Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst,’” (John 6:32-35).

“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life,” (John 6:63).

“The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things,” (Acts 17:24-25).

The Father gives life. The Son gives life. The Spirit gives life. The one and only God, the Trinity, the Lord of Heaven; it is HE who gives life and breath and all things. He does not need assistance. No “God the Mother” is required, nor is such a deity present in Scripture. Instead, Jehovah God says:

“It is I who made the earth, and created man upon it. I stretched out the heavens with My hands And I ordained all their host,” (Isaiah 45:12).

“Declare and set forth your case; Indeed, let them consult together. Who has announced this from of old? Who has long since declared it? Is it not I, the Lord? And there is no other God besides Me, A righteous God and a Savior; There is none except Me,” (Isaiah 45:21)

and likewise

“You were not to know any god except Me, For there is no savior besides Me,” (Hosea 13:4b).

There is no Savior besides Him, and we are to know no other God. The WMSCOG claims:

“God grants us the promised eternal life only after we know and believe in God the Mother.”5

Yet the Bible is clear:

“As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life,” (John 3:14-16).

“He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him,” (John 3:36).

“For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day,” (John 6:40)

God grants the promise of eternal life to those who believe in the Son, not to those who believe in the WMSCOG’s Mother God. They may claim, “We teach that you have to believe in the Son, but you also have to believe in God the Mother.” But the verses above are clear. It does not say that some who believe in the Son will have eternal life as long as they also believe in other things and fulfill other requirements. In fact, if you say that you have to trust in God the Mother in addition to Jesus, then you are not actually trusting Jesus. You don’t believe Jesus is enough to save you. You are trusting in something else. The moment you add works, rituals, or additional gods alongside Jesus that are also necessary for eternal life, you are no longer trusting in Jesus. You are saying that He is not enough. You have fallen short of actually believing in the Son. As we just read, Jesus said, “Everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.” Everyone who believes in Jesus. Not everyone who believes in Jesus and also God the Mother, or Jesus and also the feast days, or Jesus and also whatever. Everyone who believes in Jesus will have eternal life, and Jesus Himself will raise that them up on the last day. Jesus will give them life.

The WMSCOG doctrine of a “Mother God” who is necessary for us to have life and upon whom we must believe to be saved is an attack on the biblical gospel. It is a different gospel entirely. There is only one God, Jehovah (or Yahweh). He is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He has commanded us to seek eternal life by faith in Jesus Christ alone and to put aside all idols and worship of other gods and to seek Him alone. Only in Jesus Christ alone can we truly find eternal life. No “God the Mother” is needed, nor does one exist.
