The Bible does not tell us that we may pray to or worship angels. Both prayer and worship should be offered to God alone because only He is worthy of prayer and worship.
- Exodus 20:4-5, “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. 5 “You shall not worship them or serve them . . . “
- Matt. 4:10, ” . . . You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.”
- Luke 4:8, ” . . . You shall worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.”
Prayer is a form of worship to God. When we pray, we are asking God to forgive us our sins, to guide us, to help others, etc. When we pray, we sometimes do so in open speech or silent thought. People all over the world are praying simultaneously in different languages. Therefore, prayer is a trustful expectation that God is able to hear our prayers both spoken and unspoken, in multiple languages, wherever we are, and all at the same time. Such abilities belong to God alone and not of creatures. Angels are creatures who are limited. God alone is everywhere, Psalm 139 (so as to be able to hear all prayers), and omniscient, 1 John 3:20 (so as to understand all languages). To pray to angels is to assume they have the same ability as God, but this ability belongs to God the Creator and not the creature. Therefore, both prayer and worship belong to God alone.
- Colossians 2:18, “Let no one keep defrauding you of your prize by delighting in self-abasement and the worship of the angels, taking his stand on visions he has seen, inflated without cause by his fleshly mind.”
- Revelation 22:8-9, “And I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed me these things. 9 And he said to me, “Do not do that; I am a fellow servant of yours and of your brethren the prophets and of those who heed the words of this book; worship God.”
Is it okay to pray to angels and worship them? No, it is not.
