What are the commandments of Jesus?

by | Mar 24, 2021 | Jesus, Questions

Jesus commanded many things. Some of the commands were not intended for us to follow but dealt with things like telling John the Baptist to baptize Him (Matt. 3:15), rebuking the devil (Matt. 4:10), commanding people to follow Him (Matt. 4:19; 9:9), telling the paralytic to walk (Matt. 8:1-8), etc. Instead, I wanted to find in the four gospels the commands of Jesus that relate to Christians today.  This wasn’t exactly an easy thing to do. Commandment of Jesus, love one anotherThere are commands of Christ that are specifically for a single person but the principle applies today. Such an example would be when Jesus healed a blind man and said, “It shall be done to you according to your faith,” (Matt. 9:29). So, I included verses like that in the list below. The motivation for this study was from when Jesus said, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments,” (John 14:15).  I wanted to know what those commands of Christ were. So, I searched through the New Testament for the Greek imperatives (commands) of Jesus. I was surprised by what I found. Following is that list. Finally, I underlined the actual verbs that are in the imperative in Greek.

  1. Abide in Jesus   Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me,” (John 15:4).
  2. Abide in Jesus’ love   “Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love,” (John 15:9).
  3. As you judge, you will be judged   “And He was saying to them, ‘Take care what you listen to. By your standard of measure it will be measured to you; and more will be given you besides,’” (Mark 4:24).
  4. Ask God for harvesters  “Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest,” (Matthew 9:37–38).   “And He was saying to them, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest,’” (Luke 10:2).
  5. Be it done to you according to your faith   “Then He touched their eyes, saying, ‘It shall be done to you according to your faith,’” (Matthew 9:29).
  6. Be merciful (Parable of the Good Samaritan)   “30 Jesus replied and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead. 31 “And by chance a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 “Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 “But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion, 34 and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 “On the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.’ 36 “Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers’ hands?” 37 And he said, “The one who showed mercy toward him.” Then Jesus said to him, Go and do the same,” (Luke 10:30–37).
  7. Be on the alert for the return of Christ  “Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming,” (Matthew 24:42).  And, Be on the alert then, for you do not know the day nor the hour,” (Matthew 25:13).  “Even so, you too, when you see these things happening, recognize that He is near, right at the door,” (Mark 13:29).  Take heed, keep on the alert; for you do not know when the appointed time will come,” (Mark 13:33).   Be dressed in readiness, and keep your lamps lit. 36 “Be like men who are waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so that they may immediately open the door to him when he comes and knocks,” (Luke 12:35–36).
  8. Be reconciled with people  “Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering,” (Matthew 5:23–24).
  9. Be shrewd with unbelievers   “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves,” (Matthew 10:16).
  10. Believe in Jesus the light  “‘While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light.’ These things Jesus spoke, and He went away and hid Himself from them,” (John 12:36).
  11. Believe in God and also in Jesus   “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me,” (John 14:1).
  12. Believe that the Father and Jesus indwell each other  “Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves,” (John 14:11).
  13. Believe the works of Jesus   “but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father,” (John 10:38).
  14. Beware of false prophets  Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves,” (Matthew 7:15).
  15. Beware of greed    “Then He said to them, ‘Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions,’” (Luke 12:15).
  16. Come to Jesus  “Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink,’” (John 7:37).
  17. Deny yourself and follow Jesus   “Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. 25 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it,” (Matthew 16:24–25).   “And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me,” (Mark 8:34).   “And He was saying to them all, If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me,’” (Luke 9:23).
  18. Divorce   “And He answered and said, ‘Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate,” (Matthew 19:4–6).  “What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate,’” (Mark 10:9).
  19. Do not be misled by false teachers and don’t be frightened   “And Jesus answered and said to them, See to it that no one misleads you. 5 “For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will mislead many. 6 “You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end,’” (Matthew 24:4–6).   See also Matthew 24:23-26.  “And Jesus began to say to them, See to it that no one misleads you. 6 Many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He!’ and will mislead many. 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be frightened; those things must take place; but that is not yet the end. 8 For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will also be famines. These things are merely the beginning of birth pangs,’” (Mark 13:5–8).  “And then if anyone says to you, ‘Behold, here is the Christ’; or, ‘Behold, He is there’; do not believe him,” (Mark 13:21).  See Also Luke 21:8.
  20. Don’t be hypocritical   “You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye,” (Matthew 7:5).
  21. Don’t be worried about your life  “For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?”  26 “Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?” (Matthew 6:25-26).
  22. Don’t fear   So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows,” (Matthew 10:31).
  23. Don’t fear those who can kill you   Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell,” (Matthew 10:28).
  24. Don’t hinder children coming to Christ    “But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these,” (Mark 10:14).   “But Jesus called for them, saying, ‘Permit the children to come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these,’” (Luke 18:16).
  25. Don’t hinder the work of God by others  “John said to Him, ‘Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us.” 39 But Jesus said, Do not hinder him, for there is no one who will perform a miracle in My name, and be able soon afterward to speak evil of Me,’” (Mark 9:38–39).
  26. Don’t judge Do not judge so that you will not be judged,” (Matt. 7:1).  “Do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon, and you will be pardoned,” (Luke 6:37).
  27. Don’t judge according to appearance  Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment,” (John 7:24).
  28. Don’t practice righteousness before people  Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise, you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven,” (Matthew 6:1).  Also, “But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,” (Matthew 6:3).
  29. Don’t store up treasures on earth, store them in heaven  Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal,” (Matthew 6:19–20).
  30. Enter through the narrow gate (of salvation)  Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it,” (Matthew 7:13).  Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able,” (Luke 13:24).
  31. Get rid of what stumbles you “If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 “If your right-hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell,” (Matthew 5:29–30).   “If your eye causes you to stumble, throw it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, than, having two eyes, to be cast into hell,” (Mark 9:47).
  32. Give to him who asks of you  Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you,” (Matthew 5:42).  “Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back,” (Luke 6:30).
  33. Have faith in God and don’t doubt    “And Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ it will happen. 22 And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive,’” (Matthew 21:21–22).  “And Jesus answered saying to them, Have faith in God,’” (Mark 11:22).  “Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you,” (Mark 11:24).
  34. He who has ears to hear, let him hear the parable of the sower    “And He spoke many things to them in parables, saying, ‘Behold, the sower went out to sow; 4 and as he sowed, some seeds fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate them up. 5 Others fell on the rocky places, where they did not have much soil; and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of soil. 6 But when the sun had risen, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. 7 Others fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them out. 8 And others fell on the good soil and yielded a crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty. 9 He who has ears, let him hear,” (Matthew 13:3–9).  And,  Hear then the parable of the sower. 19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road. 20 The one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the man who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he falls away. 22 And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 23 And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty,’” (Matthew 13:18–23).  Also, read through to v. 43.  Also, the parallel account is found in Mark 4:1-9 and Luke 8:5–8.
  35. Hear and understand that what comes out of a person is what defiles    “After Jesus called the crowd to Him, He said to them, Hear and understand. 11 It is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man,’” (Matthew 15:10–11).  See also Mark 7:14-15.
  36. Honor your mother and father   Honor your father and mother; and you shall love your neighbor as yourself,” (Matthew 19:19).
  37. Keep watch to not fall into temptation    “Keep watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak,” (Mark 14:38).
  38. Learn the parable of the Fig Tree   Now learn the parable from the fig tree: when its branch has already become tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near; 33 so, you too, when you see all these things, recognize that He is near, right at the door,(Matthew 24:32–33).
  39. Listen to the parable about praying at all times and to not lose heart  “Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart, 2 saying, “In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect man. 3 “There was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me legal protection from my opponent.’ 4 “For a while he was unwilling; but afterward he said to himself, ‘Even though I do not fear God nor respect man, 5 yet because this widow bothers me, I will give her legal protection, otherwise by continually coming she will wear me out.’ ” 6 And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge said; 7 now, will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night and will He delay long over them?” (Luke 18:1–7).
  40. Listen to the parable of the landowner   Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard and put a wall around it and dug a winepress in it, and built a tower, and rented it out to vine-growers and went on a journey. 34 “When the harvest time approached, he sent his slaves to the vine-growers to receive his produce. 35 “The vine-growers took his slaves and beat one, and killed another, and stoned a third. 36 “Again he sent another group of slaves larger than the first; and they did the same thing to them. 37 “But afterward he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38 “But when the vine-growers saw the son, they said among themselves, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.’ 39 “They took him, and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40 “Therefore when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vine-growers?” 41 They said to Him, “He will bring those wretches to a wretched end, and will rent out the vineyard to other vine-growers who will pay him the proceeds at the proper seasons,’” (Matthew 21:33–41).
  41. Love one another   “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another, (John 13:34).
  42. Love your enemies   “But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,” (Luke 6:27).
  43. Make disciples of all nations    “And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age,’” (Matthew 28:18–20).
  44. Make friends with opponents   Make friends quickly with your opponent at law while you are with him on the way, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison,” (Matthew 5:25).
  45. Let your light shine  Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven,” (Matthew 5:16).
  46. Pray and ask God   Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you,” (Matthew 7:7).
  47. Pray in secret   “But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you,” (Matthew 6:6).
  48. Pray not to enter temptation   “When He arrived at the place, He said to them, ‘Pray that you may not enter into temptation,’” (Luke 22:40)
  49. Pray this way   Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10 ‘Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. 11 ‘Give us this day our daily bread. 12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors,” (Matthew 6:9–12).   “And He said to them, ‘When you pray, say: ‘Father, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. 3 ‘Give us each day our daily bread. 4 ‘And forgive us our sins, For we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation,’ ” (Luke 11:2–4).
  50. Rebuking a brother in Christ  “If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. 16 But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed. 17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector, (Matthew 18:15–17).  Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him,” (Luke 17:3).
  51. Rejoice in persecution  “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you,” (Matthew 5:12).
  52. Rejoice over the lost being found   “What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? 5 “When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 “And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ 7 “I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance,” (Luke 15:4–7).
  53. Rejoice that your names are written in heaven   “Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven,” (Luke 10:20).
  54. Remember Lot’s wife   “Remember Lot’s wife. 33 Whoever seeks to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it,” (Luke 17:32–33).
  55. Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s   “They said to Him, “Caesar’s.” Then He said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s,’” (Matthew 22:21).  “And Jesus said to them, ‘Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.’ And they were amazed at Him,” (Mark 12:17).  Also, Luke 20:25.
  56. Repent  “From that time Jesus began to preach and say, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand,’” (Matthew 4:17).  “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel,” (Mark 1:15).
  57. Seek first the kingdom of God   “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you,” (Matthew 6:33).
  58. Take communion   “While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is My body.” 27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; 28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins,’” (Matthew 26:26–28).   “While they were eating, He took some bread, and after a blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, Take it; this is My body.’ 23 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, “This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,’” (Mark 14:22–24).
  59. Take courage that Jesus has overcome the world   “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world,” (John 16:33).
  60. Take Jesus’ yoke and learn from Him   “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light,” (Matthew 11:28–30).
  61. Treat people how you want to be treated   “In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets,” (Matthew 7:12).
  62. Turn the other cheek  “But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also, (Matthew 5:39).
