We are not divine, the Holy Spirit lives in us. Divinity is the quality of being God. We can never be God. Instead, we can be indwelt by God. Jesus said in John 16:23 that he and the Father would make their abode in us. This means that the Godhead is indwelling us but the indwelling is different than our nature.

Furthermore, we have to be careful here about the phrase ‘are we human and divine.’  To say we “are” something deals with our nature, our essence.  Our nature does not change and become divine when the Holy Spirit lives in us.  Rather, we are humans who have the divine Lord dwelling in us.  There is a huge difference between having the Divine Lord live in us and being divine.

The only one who is both human and divine is Jesus.  The Bible says in Colossians 2:9, “For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.”

Jesus was able to be divine because he was the Word made flesh (John 1:1, 14). Within him are two distinct natures: divine and human. These two natures are manifested in a single person. It is a permanent incarnation.

But, back to us being indwelt by the Holy Spirit and therefore being divine. Again, to reiterate, Christians are indwelt by God. We are indwelt by the divine. But we’re still human in our human nature does not become divine. Therefore, we are not divine when we are indwelt by God the Holy Spirit.
