Movie Review: Edge of Tomorrow

by | Jun 18, 2014 | Book and Movie Reviews

In the movie Edge of Tomorrow, Tom Cruise plays Maj. William Cage, a rather cowardly officer who is demoted and forced to participate in ground warfare against extremely aggressive and deadly alien invaders that have been sweeping through Europe laying waste to everyone in their path. They’re about to cross the English Channel and enter into England, but ground troops are sent to the continent in a surprise attack. Only, they were the ones who are surprised. Within minutes Cage is killed, but not before taking out an alien. As a result, he is forced into a time loop where he lives out the same day over and over again–after he is killed repeatedly. However, after each death, he becomes a little better at fighting and is transformed into a bold and courageous soldier. In the process, he befriends Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt) who also time looped for a while and understands exactly what’s happening to him. She guides him and assists him in attacking and outsmarting the enemy. As a team, they have great chemistry and are very believable.

The movie is excellent. The acting was superb, and the special effects were jaw-droppingly good. The aliens were well thought out, and the CGI used to bring them to life was very convincing. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, being a science fiction buff, and particularly delighted in seeing the cowardly William Cage become a bold warrior. His transformation was believable and methodical.

There was no nudity, minimal swearing, but a lot of violence. If you are into science fiction, then you won’t be disappointed with Edge of Tomorrow.
