Movie Review: Terminator Genisys

by | Jul 7, 2015 | Book and Movie Reviews

Yet again we have a time-traveling, race to the finish, explosion laden, special effects, sci-fi goodness all wrapped up in a Terminator Movie.  Yes!!  Terminator Genisys was awesome. Now if you have followed any of my previous reviews you will know that I’m a sci-fi nut and if a movie is science fiction then it already has a leg up in the good-movie-category. That said, this was fun. If you have seen all of the previous Terminator movies then you’re going to really enjoy this one as it repeatedly nods to past plots. I found myself smiling here and there as the movie forced me to reminisce through the previous incarnations of the Terminator.

Once Again Skynet is up to no good and John Connor is there, as usual, to cause problems. With a little time travel back to 1984 the stage is set once again for the beginning (Genisys) of the Terminator onslaught.  It is the same only different.  We have an aged Arnold Schwarzenegger who fights his way through the movie -and even manages a forced smile or two. He’s aged because his skin is human and it gets old. But, he’s not obsolete.

Kyle Reese does a great job of protecting and getting protected as he battles robotic baddies all the way through this special effects phantasm of awesomeness.  Again, yes!!

As I have mentioned in previous reviews, I must once again refer to my wife who prefers “talking movies” where people actually care about one another, sit and have long conversations, and then something romantic happens.  She did not join me.  I mention this because my highly testosterone-laden opinion necessitates that explosions, special effects, and mayhem are what makes a movie good with occasional smattering’s of necessary dialogue to make things coherent. My wife, on the other hand, cannot see the majestic wisdom of my perspective.  But, that’s okay since she makes great burritos.  So if you’re a woman reading this review, you might want to take that into consideration and go see a “talking movie” because this movie only has a tinge of romance but an awful lot of shooting, fighting, car chases, and explosions.

There’s nudity in the movie but it’s not really nudity. You don’t see anything. Time travel requires people to not wear close and it is done tastefully. The Lord’s name is used in vain a few times and there’s an occasional bout of cussing but it’s not over the top.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film and if you have the same appreciation for sci-fi as I do, then you’re gonna love it.
