- BIBLE (Correct): The atonement is the act of God in Christ by which the offense against God due to our sins has been addressed and removed. This atonement is received by faith (Eph. 2:8-9).
- Christian Science: In Christian Science, atonement is a state of knowledge, of at-one-ment with God where a person gains correct thinking in terms of Christian Science teachings.
- “One sacrifice, however great, is insufficient to pay the debt of sin. The atonement requires constant self-immolation on the sinner’s part. That God’s wrath should be vented upon His beloved Son, is divinely unnatural. Such a theory is man-made,” (S&H 23).
- “The material blood of Jesus was no more efficacious to cleanse from sin when it was shed upon ‘the accursed tree,’ than when it was flowing in his veins as he went daily about his Father’s business,” (S&H p. 25).
- “ATONEMENT is the exemplification of man’s unity with God, whereby man reflects divine Truth, Life, and Love,” (S&H p. 18, Caps original).
- Islam: There is no atonement concept in Islam, and it rejects the sacrifice of Christ on the cross for our sins.
- Jehovah’s Witnesses: Atonement is necessary to have sins forgiven. Jesus’ atonement occurred not on a cross but a stake and was for the 144,000.
- LDS – Mormonism: In Mormonism, the atonement is Christ’s sacrifice on the cross as is his shedding of blood in the garden of Gestheme.
- “Jesus paid for all our sins when He suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane,” (Laurel Rohlfing, “Sharing Time: The Atonement,” Friend, Mar. 1989, p. 39).
- “That through his atonement, and by obedience to the principles of the gospel, mankind might be saved,” (Doctrine and Covenants 138:4).
- “But in reality the pain and suffering, the triumph and grandeur, of the atonement took place primarily in Gethsemane,” (Bruce R. McConkie, Doctrinal New Testament Commentary 1:774).
- “The benefits of the atonement for personal salvation arise out of our obedience to the laws and commandments of the gospel,” (Roy W. Doxey, The Doctrine and Covenants Speaks 1:104).
- “That through his atonement, and by obedience to the principles of the gospel, mankind might be saved,” (Doctrine and Covenants 138:4).
- New Age Movement: Atonement is the harmonizing of truth and error in the mind of the person, enabling that person to learn and progress.
- Roman Catholic: Christ’s death on the cross is the atoning sacrifice that makes it possible for a person to be saved through the Roman Catholic church and its system of sacramental obedience.
