Islam by topic: Bible

by | Jun 9, 2016 | Islam, World Religions

Islam teaches that the Bible is corrupted.  It says that Allah gave the Psalms to David (Surah 4:163), the Torah to Moses (Surah 2:87), the Gospel to Jesus (Surah 57:27), and stated that none can alter the words of Allah (Surah 6:34; Surah 6:115; Surah 18:27), the scriptures that were then in their possession (Surah 2:41; 2:89).  Yet, it somehow manages to assert that Allah’s words have been changed and the Bible is not trustworthy.  This obvious inconsistency cannot be explained logically by Muslims. Yet, they continue to hold that the Bible is has been altered.Open Bible on white

  1. Summary: Islam and the Bible
    1. None can change Allah’s words (Surah 6:34; Surah 6:115; Surah 18:27)
    2. Jesus was given the gospel by Allah (Surah 57:27)
    3. The Quran confirms the Gospels (Surah 5:48) and those scriptures that were present with them (Surah 2:41; 2:89 )
    4. The Gospels contradict the Quran
  2. Allah gave Jesus the gospel
    1. Surah 57:27, “Then, in their wake, We followed them up with (others of) Our messengers: We sent after them Jesus the son of Mary, and bestowed on him the Gospel; and We ordained in the hearts of those who followed him Compassion and Mercy. But the Monasticism which they invented for themselves, We did not prescribe for them: (We commanded) only the seeking for the Good Pleasure of Allah; but that they did not foster as they should have done. Yet We bestowed, on those among them who believed, their (due) reward, but many of them are rebellious transgressors.”
  3. Allah gave David the Psalms
    1. Surah 4:163, We have sent thee inspiration, as We sent it to Noah and the Messengers after him: we sent inspiration to Abraham, Isma’il, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes, to Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon, and to David We gave the Psalms.
  4. Allah gave Moses the Torah
    1. Surah 2:87, “We gave Moses the Book and followed him up with a succession of messengers; We gave Jesus the son of Mary Clear (Signs) and strengthened him with the holy spirit. Is it that whenever there comes to you a messenger with what ye yourselves desire not, ye are puffed up with pride? – Some ye called impostors, and others ye slay!”
    2. Surah 40:53-54, “We did aforetime give Moses the (Book of) Guidance, and We gave the book in inheritance to the Children of Israel 54 A Guide and a Message to men of Understanding.”
  5. Bible was with and/or in possession of the Jews in Muhammad’s day
    1. Surah 2:41, “And believe in what I reveal, confirming the revelation which is with you, and be not the first to reject Faith therein, nor sell My Signs for a small price; and fear Me, and Me alone.”
    2. Surah 2:89, “And when there comes to them a Book from Allah, confirming what is with them [Book of Moses per Surah 2:87] – although from of old they had prayed for victory against those without Faith – when there comes to them that which they (should) have recognised, they refuse to believe in it but the curse of Allah is on those without Faith.”
  6. Islam and the Bible: Believe the Scriptures that came before Muhammad!
    1. Surah 4:136, “O ye who believe! Believe in Allah and His Apostle, and the scripture which He hath sent to His Apostle and the scripture which He sent to those before (him). Any who denieth Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Apostles, and the Day of Judgement, hath gone far, far astray.”
  7. Islam and the Bible: Believe in the Old and New Testament!
    1. Surah 3:84, “Say: “We believe in Allah, and in what has been revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Isma’il, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and in (the Books) given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets, from their Lord: We make no distinction between one and another among them, and to Allah do we bow our will (in Islam).”
  8. Islam and the Bible: Christians and Jews changed and distorted the Bible?
    1. “Narrated Ubaidullah: Ibn ‘Abbas said, “Why do you ask the people of the scripture about anything while your Book (Quran) which has been revealed to Allah’s Apostle is newer and the latest? You read it pure, undistorted and unchanged, and Allah has told you that the people of the scripture (Jews and christians) changed their scripture and distorted it, and wrote the scripture with their own hands and said, ‘It is from Allah,’ to sell it for a little gain. Does not the knowledge which has come to you prevent you from asking them about anything? No, by Allah, we have never seen any man from them asking you regarding what has been revealed to you!”  (Sahih Bukhari, Book #92, Hadith #461)
    2. Narrated Ubaidullah bin Abdullah bin Utba:  Ibn Abbas said, “O Muslims? How do you ask the people of the Scriptures, though your Book (i.e. the quran) which was revealed to His Prophet is the most recent information from Allah and you recite it, the Book that has not been distorted? Allah has revealed to you that the people of the scriptures have changed with their own hands what was revealed to them and they have said (as regards their changed Scriptures): This is from Allah, in order to get some worldly benefit thereby.” Ibn Abbas added: “Isn’t the knowledge revealed to you sufficient to prevent you from asking them? By Allah I have never seen any one of them asking (Muslims) about what has been revealed to you.”  (Sahih Bukari, Book #48, Hadith #850)
  9. Islam and the Bible: Confirmed by the Quran?
    1. Confirms scriptures that were then in their possession
      1. Surah 2:41, “And believe in what I reveal, confirming the revelation which is with you, and be not the first to reject Faith therein, nor sell My Signs for a small price; and fear Me, and Me alone.”
      2. Surah 2:89, “And when there comes to them a Book from Allah, confirming what is with them – although from of old they had prayed for victory against those without Faith – when there comes to them that which they (should) have recognized, they refuse to believe in it but the curse of Allah is on those without Faith.”
    2. Surah 2:101, “And when there came to them an apostle from Allah, confirming what was with them, a party of the people of the Book threw away the Book of Allah behind their backs, as if (it had been something) they did not know!”
    3. Surah 3:3, “It is He Who sent down to thee (step by step), in truth, the Book, confirming what went before it; and He sent down the Law (of Moses) and the Gospel (of Jesus) before this, as a guide to mankind, and He sent down the criterion (of judgment between right and wrong).”
    4. Surah 5:48, “To thee We sent the Scripture in truth, confirming the scripture that came before it, and guarding it in safety: so judge between them by what Allah hath revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging from the Truth that hath come to thee. To each among you have we prescribed a law and an open way. If Allah had so willed, He would have made you a single people, but (His plan is) to test you in what He hath given you: so strive as in a race in all virtues. The goal of you all is to Allah. It is He that will show you the truth of the matters in which ye dispute.”
  10. Criterion of truth
    1. Surah 10:94, “If thou wert in doubt as to what We have revealed unto thee, then ask those who have been reading the Book from before thee: the Truth hath indeed come to thee from thy Lord: so be in no wise of those in doubt.”
  11. Dispute not with the people of the Book
    1. Surah 29:46, “And dispute ye not with the People of the Book, except with means better (than mere disputation), unless it be with those of them who inflict wrong (and injury): but say, “We believe in the revelation which has come down to us and in that which came down to you; Our Allah and your Allah is one; and it is to Him we bow (in Islam).”
  12. Islam and the Bible: None can alter the words of Allah!
    1. Surah 6:34, “Rejected were the messengers before thee: with patience and constancy they bore their rejection and their wrongs, until Our aid did reach them: there is none that can alter the words (and decrees) of Allah. Already hast thou received some account of those messengers.”
    2. Surah 6:115, “The word of thy Lord doth find its fulfillment in truth and in justice: None can change His words: for He is the one who heareth and knoweth all.”
    3. Surah 10:64, “For them are glad tidings, in the life of the present and in the Hereafter; no change can there be in the words of Allah. This is indeed the supreme felicity.”
    4. Surah 18:27, “And recite (and teach) what has been revealed to thee of the Book of thy Lord: none can change His Words, and none wilt thou find as a refuge other than Him.”
  13. People of the Gospel judge by what is in the gospel
    1. Surah 5:47, “Let the people of the Gospel judge by what Allah hath revealed therein. If any do fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) those who rebel.”
    2. Surah 5:68, “Say: “O People of the Book! Ye have no ground to stand upon unless ye stand fast by the Law, the Gospel, and all the revelation that has come to you from your Lord.” It is the revelation that cometh to thee from thy Lord, that increaseth in most of them their obstinate rebellion and blasphemy. But sorrow thou not over (these) people without Faith.
  14. People of the Book
    1. Rejected the Quran
      1. Surah 2:101, “And when there came to them an apostle from Allah, confirming what was with them, a party of the people of the Book threw away the Book of Allah behind their backs, as if (it had been something) they did not know!”
    2. Don’t associate partners with Allah
      1. Surah 3:64, Say: “O People of the Book! Come to common terms as between us and you: That we worship none but Allah; that we associate no partners with him; that we erect not, from among ourselves, Lords and patrons other than Allah.” If then they turn back, say ye: “Bear witness that we (at least) are Muslims (bowing to Allah’s Will).”
    3. Don’t believe in Allah for no good reason
      1. Surah 5:59, Say: “O people of the Book! Do ye disapprove of us for no other reason than that we believe in Allah, and the revelation that hath come to us and that which came before (us), and (perhaps) that most of you are rebellious and disobedient?”
