Islam by topic: Salvation

by | Jun 10, 2016 | Islam, World Religions

Salvation in Islam is only through the worship of Allah, accepting Muhammad as a prophet, doing good works, being sincere, repenting of sins, and hoping that Allah will forgive you. The only guarantee of salvation is by dying in jihad. Forgiveness of sins is obtained by Allah’s grace without a mediator. The Muslim must believe Allah exists, believe in the fundamental doctrines of Islam, believe that Muhammad is his prophet, and follow the commands of Allah given in the Quran in order to obtain salvation.

  1. Allah forgives all sins
    1. Surah 39:53, “Say: “O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
  2. By Seeking Allah’s forgiveness
    1. Surah 4:110, “If anyone does evil or wrongs his own soul but afterward seeks Allah’s forgiveness, he will find Allah Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.”
    2. Surah 11:52, “And O my people! Ask forgiveness of your Lord, and turn to Him (in repentance): He will send you the skies pouring abundant rain, and add strength to your strength: so turn ye not back in sin!”
  3. By Works and faith
    1. Surah 4:124, “If any do deeds of righteousness – be they male or female – and have faith, they will enter Heaven, and not the least injustice will be done to them.”
    2. Surah 5:9, “To those who believe and do deeds of righteousness hath Allah promised forgiveness and a great reward.”
    3. Surah 11:11, “Not so do those who show patience and constancy, and work righteousness; for them is forgiveness (of sins) and a great reward.”
    4. Surah 33:70-71, “O ye who believe! Fear Allah, and (always) say a word directed to the Right: 71 That He may make your conduct whole and sound and forgive you your sins: He that obeys Allah and His Apostle, has already attained the highest achievement.”
    5. Surah 66:8, “O ye who believe! Turn to Allah with sincere repentance: In the hope that your Lord will remove from you your ills and admit you to Gardens beneath which Rivers flow – the Day that Allah will not permit to be humiliated the Prophet and those who believe with him. Their Light will run forward before them and by their right hands, while they say, “Our Lord! Perfect our Light for us, and grant us Forgiveness: for Thou hast power over all things.”
  4. Cannot be through Christ
    1. Surah 35:18, “Nor can a bearer of burdens bear another’s burdens if one heavily laden should call another to (bear) his load. Not the least portion of it can be carried (by the other). Even though he be nearly related. Thou canst but admonish such as fear their Lord unseen and establish regular Prayer. And whoever purifies himself does so for the benefit of his own soul; and the destination (of all) is to Allah.”
  5. Good deeds alone not enough
    1. “Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: None amongst you would attain salvation purely because of his deeds. A person said: Allah’s Messenger, even you also. Thereupon he said: Yes. Not even I, but that Allah wraps me in Mercy, but you should act with moderation. This hadith has been transmitted on the authority of Bukair b. al-Ashajj with a slight variation of wording.”  (Sahih Muslim, Book #039, Hadith #6760)
    2. “Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: There is none amongst you whose deeds alone would attain salvation for him. They (the Companions) said: Allah’s Messenger, not even you? He (the Holy Prophet) said: Not even I, but that Allah wraps me in Mercy and He grants me pardon. Ibn ‘Aun pointed towards his head with his hand saying: Not even I, but that Allah wraps me in His Forgiveness and Mercy.” (Sahih Muslim, Book #039, Hadith #6762)
    3. “Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: There is none whose deeds alone can’secure salvation for him. They said: Allah’s Messenger, not even you? Thereupon he said: Not even I, but that, the Mercy of Allah should take hold of me.”  (Sahih Muslim, Book #039, Hadith #6763)
  6. Repeating a sentence 100 times adds good works and removes bad ones.
    1. Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “If one says one-hundred times in one day: “None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, the Alone Who has no partners, to Him belongs Dominion and to Him belong all the Praises, and He has power over all things (i.e. Omnipotent)”, one will get the reward of manumitting ten slaves, and one-hundred good deeds will be written in his account, and one-hundred bad deeds will be wiped off or erased from his account, and on that day he will be protected from the morning till evening from Satan, and nobody will be superior to him except one who has done more than that which he has done.”  (Sahih Bukhari, Book #54, Hadith #514)
  7. Scales of works
    1. Surah 23:102-103, “Then those whose balance (of good deeds) is heavy – they will attain salvation: 103 But those whose balance is light, will be those who have lost their souls, in Hell will they abide.”
    2. Surah 21:47, “We shall set up scales of justice for the Day of Judgment, so that not a soul will be dealt with unjustly in the least, and if there be (no more than) the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it (to account): and enough are We to take account.”
  8. Sincerity and repentance necessary
    2. Surah 4:17, “Allah accept the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance and repent soon afterwards; to them will Allah turn in mercy: For Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom.”
  9. Tied to faith in Muhammad
    1. Surah 4:13-14, “Those are limits set by Allah: those who obey Allah and His Apostle will be admitted to Gardens with rivers flowing beneath,, to abide therein (for ever) and that will be the supreme achievement. 14 But those who disobey Allah and His Apostle and transgress His limits will be admitted to a Fire, to abide therein: And they shall have a humiliating punishment.”
    2. Surah 4:150-151, “Those who deny Allah and His apostles,, and (those who) wish to separate Allah from His apostles, saying: “We believe in some but reject others”: And (those who) wish to take a course midway – 151 They are in truth (equally) unbelievers; and we have prepared for unbelievers a humiliating punishment.”
    3. Surah 8:13, “This because they contended against Allah and His Apostle: If any contend against Allah and His Apostle, Allah is strict in punishment.”
    4. Surah 9:63, “Know they not that for those who oppose Allah and His Apostle, is the Fire of Hell?—wherein they shall dwell. That is the supreme disgrace.”
    5. Surah 33:70-71, “O ye who believe! Fear Allah, and (always) say a word directed to the Right: 71 That He may make your conduct whole and sound and forgive you your sins: He that obeys Allah and His Apostle, has already attained the highest achievement.”
