What are the similarities between Mormonism and Islam?

by | Dec 18, 2018 | Islam, Mormonism, World Religions

There are many similarities between Mormonism and Islam.  Both teach that the Bible is corrupt yet the Bible predicts their respective prophets.  Both teach that angels visited their prophets in order to restore the true religion and that their prophets are closely related to the means of salvation.  Both have new sacred books (Book of Mormon and the Quran) that they claim were revealed by inspiration.  Both say that their God is the only true God, that their religion is the only true religion, and salvation is by works.

Below is a table with documentation from both Mormon and Islamic sources, categorized by similarities. However, it is worth noting that there are also significant differences between Mormonism and Islam.  Mormonism is polytheistic where Islam is not.  Jesus is one of three gods in the godhead in Mormonism, where Islam teaches only one God.  Mormonism teaches that people have the potential becoming gods, where Islam would deny that. Mormonism says that Jesus was crucified, where Islam does not.

I leave it to you to examine the similarities and draw your own conclusions from them.  In my opinion, the same demonic force is behind both of them.

The Claim Mormonism Islam
The Bible is corrupted
  • “I believe the Bible as it read when it came from the pen of the original writers. Ignorant translators, careless transcribers, or designing and corrupt priests have committed many errors(Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 327).
  • There are many things in the Bible which do not, as they now stand, accord with the revelations of the Holy Ghost to me.(Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 310. See also History of the Church 5:425).
  • Tahrif, some of the sacred writings of God have become corrupted.  The Tawrat (Torah) give to Moses (Musa), the Psalms (Zabur) to David (Daud), the Gospel (injil) to Jesus (Isa).
  • There are the books of Abraham (Surah 87:18-19) which were lost.
The Bible prophecied their prophet’s coming
  • Mormons use the Bible when it souts them to support their doctrines but deny it when it does not.  So, they appeal to Ezekiel in support of Mormonism.
  • Ezekiel 37:19, “say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, ‘Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel, his companions; and I will put them with it, with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they will be one in My hand.'”
  • Deut. 18:18, “I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.”
  • Note: This is in reference to raising someone from the Jews (countrymen)
  • Surah 46:10, “Say: ‘See ye? If (this teaching) be from Allah, and ye reject it, and a witness from among the Children of Israel testifies to its similarity (with earlier scripture), and has believed while ye are arrogant, (how unjust ye are!) truly, Allah guides not a people unjust.”
Angelic visitation to their prophets to restore the truth
  • “John, writing in the New Testament’s book of Revelation, foresaw ‘another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people.’ One specific angel held keys of responsibility for the Book of Mormon. That was the angel Moroni! These examples are but a few of many biblical doctrines that are clarified by scriptures of the Restoration” (Russell M. Nelson, “Scriptural Witnesses,” Ensign (Conference Edition), November 2007, pp. 44-45).
  • Surah 2:97, “Say: ‘Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel – for he brings down the (revelation) to thy heart by Allah’s will, a confirmation of what went before, and guidance and glad tidings for those who believe.'”
  • Surah 53:4-9, “It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 5 He was taught by one Mighty in Power, 6 Endued with Wisdom: for he appeared (in stately form); 7 While he was in the highest part of the horizon: 8 Then he approached and came closer, 9 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer.”
Their new sacred book revealed by inspiration
  • “Thus the Book of Mormon was translated by the gift and power of God, and not by any power of man’” (Russell M. Nelson, “A Treasured Testament,” Ensign, July 1993, p. 61. Citing David Whitmer, An Address to All Believers in Christ, p. 12).
  • Surah 6:19, “Say: ‘What thing is most weighty in evidence?” Say: “Allah is witness between me and you; This Qur’an hath been revealed to me by inspiration, that I may warn you and all whom it reaches. Can ye possibly bear witness that besides Allah there is another Allah?” Say: “Nay! I cannot bear witness!” Say: “But in truth He is the one Allah, and I truly am innocent of (your blasphemy of) joining others with Him.”
Their “new book” is the most correct
  • “I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book” (Joseph Smith, History of the Church 4:461. See also Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 194).
  • Surah 4:82, “Do they not consider the Qur’an (with care)? Had it been from other Than Allah, they would surely have found therein Much discrepancy.”
  • Surah 17:105, “We sent down the (Qur’an) in Truth, and in Truth has it descended: and We sent thee but to give Glad Tidings and to warn (sinners).
  • Surah 39:28, “(It is) a Qur’an in Arabic, without any crookedness (therein): in order that they may guard against Evil.”
Closely associate their prophets with God
  • “President Harold B. Lee, 11th President of the LDS church,  “A testimony of Joseph Smith is vital. No man can accept Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world, no man can accept this as His church, the Church of Jesus Christ, unless he can accept Joseph Smith as God’s mouthpiece and the restorer of His work in these latter days.” (The Teachings of Harold B. Lee, p. 371).
  • Surah 3:32, “Say: “Obey Allah and His Apostle”: But if they turn back, Allah loveth not those who reject Faith.
  • Surah 4:136, “O ye who believe! Believe in Allah and His Apostle, and the scripture which He hath sent to His Apostle and the scripture which He sent to those before (him). Any who denieth Allah, His angels, His Books, His Apostles, and the Day of Judgment, hath gone far, far astray.”
