Quotes on Christendom from the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society:

The WBTS fails to distinguish between denominational differences among so-called Christian churches that are non-Jehovah’s Witnesses.  It lumps them all together and ignores the fact that many Christian churches oppose the idolatry of Roman Catholicism, the liberal sexual perversions of the false churches, and the denial of the sufficiencychristendom watchtower of Scripture by others.  The Watchtower commits many logical errors when it holds all of Christianity in its various denominations guilty for the sins of a few false churches and false denominations.

The following quotes are arranged so that you can copy and paste the entire paragraph. The goal is to provide you with information so that when discussing things with Jehovah’s Witnesses and other people, you can document the various false teachings of the Jehovah’s Witness organization which is also known as the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society.

  1. Christendom is equated with paganism
    1. Constantine endeavored to fuse Christianity with certain pagan practices and teachings, and his own course set the stage for such fusion religion to become the official religion of the empire. This made Greece a part of Christendom.” (Insight Vol. 1, p. 1005, Greece, Greeks)
  2. Christendom is apostate
    1. “The great day of Jehovah that struck Jerusalem was an indication of the judgment to come upon apostate Christendom in our time. Furthermore, the rest of “Babylon the Great,” the world empire of false religion, will be destroyed. Thereafter, the remaining parts of Satan’s wicked system of things will be annihilated. Yet, God’s people as a group will survive because they are taking refuge in Jehovah.” (Watchtower 1/15/2011, pp. 3-4, par. 5 “Take Refuge in the Name of Jehovah”)
  3. Christendom’s “false teachings” include…
    1. Trinity, hellfire, the immortality of the soul, holidays
      1. “Satan, who pretends to be “an angel of light,” has made clever use of false religion in misleading people. (2 Cor. 11:14) Under the guise of Christianity, Christendom teaches doctrines—including the Trinity, hellfire, and immortality of the soul—that are awash in myths and falsehoods. Christendom also promotes holidays, such as Christmas and Easter, whose seemingly innocent customs are actually rooted in mythology and paganism.” (Watchtower 7/15/2011, p. 17 par. 11 Will You Heed Jehovah’s Clear Warnings?)
    2. Hell and eternal punishment
      1. ” PREACHERS in Christendom who teach the fear of God frequently do so on the basis of the unscriptural teaching that God punishes sinners eternally in hellfire. Such a doctrine is contrary to what the Bible teaches about Jehovah as a God of love and justice.” (Watchtower 3/1/2007, 3/1 p. 25 par. 1 Enjoy Life in the Fear of Jehovah, caps original)
    3. Immortal Soul
      1. “For the most part, the religions of Christendom have ignored the hope of everlasting life on earth. Whereas the Bible teaches that the soul dies, the majority of churches teach the unscriptural doctrine that man has an immortal soul that survives death and lives on in the spirit realm.” (Watchtower 8/15/2009, p. 3 par. 2 Everlasting Life on Earth—A God-Given Hope)
    4. Predestination
      1. “In the Orient, Hindus and Buddhists believe that what a person is presently going through is the result of what he did in a past life, and his actions in this life will determine what he will experience in the next life. Other religions—including many churches in Christendom—also give credence to such fatalistic beliefs by their doctrine of predestination.” (Watchtower 3/1209, p. 3 “It Wasn’t My Time to Go”)
      2. Why is the doctrine of predestination unreasonable?  If God foreknew and decreed Adam’s fall into sin, then Jehovah became the author of sin when he made man and he would be responsible for all human wickedness and suffering. This cannot be reconciled with the fact that Jehovah is a God of love who hates wickedness.” (Watchtower 8/15/1998, p. 30 Do You Remember?)
  4. Christendom was apostate by the fourth century and produced successive schisms
    1. “The unity of true Christians stands in contrast to the strife that exists among the churches of Christendom. By the fourth century, apostate Christianity was so widespread that a pagan emperor of Rome took control of it, contributing to the development of Christendom. Then, in successive schisms, many kingdoms split from Rome and formed their own state churches.” (Watchtower 9/15/2010, p. 15 par. 14 Unity Identifies True Worship)
    2. Christendom’s churches splintered into numerous sects, most of which tolerate nationalism. Churchgoers have even gone to war against fellow believers of another nation. Today, Christendom is divided by both sectarian beliefs and nationalism.” (Watchtower 9/15/2010, p. 15 par. 15 Unity Identifies True Worship)
  5. Christendom prefers its only religious creeds over God’s truth as taught by Jesus
    1. “Mankind, and particularly Christendom, has imitated the first-century nation of Israel. Leaders and people in general in Christendom prefer their own religious creeds over the truths of God that Jesus taught.” (Watchtower 5/1/2002, p. 21 par. 10 Who Will Survive the Day of Jehovah?)
  6. Christendom adopted the two-piece cross from pagans
    1. “Greek scholar Vine then mentions the Chaldean origin of the two-piece cross and how it was adopted from the pagans by Christendom in the third century C.E. as a symbol of Christ’s impalement.—Vine’s Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words, 1981, Vol. 1, p. 256.” (Insight Vol. 1, p. 1191 Impalement)
  7. Christendom’s clergy is “the man of lawlessness” and “the son of destruction”
    1. “Christ’s “presence” since 1914 has gone unnoticed by most of the earth’s inhabitants. (2 Pet. 3:3, 4) Soon, however, he will make his presence manifest by executing Jehovah’s judgments on the various elements of Satan’s system of things. The destruction of “the man of lawlessness,” the clergy of Christendom, will be an unmistakable “manifestation of his presence.” (Watchtower 9/15/2010, p. 28 par. 13 Our Active Leader Today)
    2. Who is “the man of lawlessness,” and how will he be done away with? This composite “man” is the clergy class of Christendom. The one authorized to declare God’s judgments against the wicked and to give orders to execute them is “the Word”—God’s Chief Spokesman, Jesus Christ. (John 1:1) Hence, it can be said that Jesus will do away with the man of lawlessness “by the spirit [activating force] of his mouth.” (Watchtower 9/15/2008, p. 30 par. 5 Highlights From the Letters to the Thessalonians and Timothy)
    3. Some among the early Christians turned apostate and gained followers. (Acts 20:29, 30) While Jesus’ apostles were living, they acted as “a restraint” against such apostasy, but after they died, many false Christian sects developed. Today, there are hundreds of conflicting religions in the realm of Christendom. The Bible pointed to the rise of Christendom’s clergy, describing them collectively as “the man of lawlessness” and “the son of destruction . . . whom the Lord Jesus will do away with . . . and bring to nothing by the manifestation of his presence.”—2 Thess. 2:3, 6-8.” (Watchtower 6/15/2008, p. 8 par. 6 Things From Which We Must Flee)
  8. Christendom has hidden the identity of the true God from millions
    1. the leaders of other religions inside and outside of Christendom have also hidden the identity of the true God from millions upon millions of worshippers.” (Watchtower 1/15/2011, pp. 4-5 par. 9 “Take Refuge in the Name of Jehovah”)
  9. Christendom is “Babylon the Great”
    1. “…the execution of divine judgment upon the apostate kingdom of Israel makes it certain that God will bring destruction upon Christendom, the most reprehensible part of “Babylon the Great,” the world empire of false religion.” (Watchtower 11/15/2004, p. 19 par. 20, Jehovah’s Judgment Will Come Against the Wicked)
  10. Christendom embraces evolution
    1. “Even today, many in Christendom continue to embrace theories and philosophies that contradict the Bible. One example is Darwin’s theory of evolution, which they have accepted in place of the Genesis account of creation. In making this substitution, the churches have, in effect, made Darwin a modern-day Aristotle and evolution an article of faith.” (Watchtower 4/1/2005, 4/1 pp. 5-6 Science and the Bible—Do They Really Contradict Each Other?)
  11. Christendom embraces modern, liberal views of morality
    1. Excuses gross sin
      1. “In sharp contrast, many of Christendom’s churches, as well as apostates, regard as obsolete those parts of the Bible that contradict modern, liberal views of morality. Hence, they excuse all forms of gross sin, even among the clergy.” (Watchtower 9/1/2005, pp. 30-31 Let Jehovah’s “Saying” Safeguard You)
    2. Approves of homosexuality
      1. “Moreover, Christendom does not “let justice roll forth just like waters, and righteousness like a constantly flowing torrent.” Instead, she consistently soft-pedals God’s moral requirements. She tolerates fornication and other gross sins and even goes so far as to bless homosexual unions!” (Watchtower 11/15/2004 11/15 p. 22 par. 12 Search for Jehovah, the Examiner of Hearts)
  12. Christendom has back church services that are cold, sanctimonious, or boisterous
    1. “Of course, we do not want our meetings to resemble Christendom’s church services. These can be either cold and sanctimonious or boisterous like rock concerts. We want the meetings at our Kingdom Halls to be warm and inviting but not to the point of resembling a neighborhood social club.” (Watchtower 11/1/2006, p. 30 par. 13 Showing Respect for Our Sacred Gatherings)
  13. Christendom hates God’s name
    1. “On the other hand, Christendom deserves the coming destruction for contributing to the spiritual illiteracy common among churchgoers and for its manifest hatred of God’s name.” (Watchtower 1/15/2011, p. 4 par. 9 “Take Refuge in the Name of Jehovah”)
  14. Christendom’s churches have fomented anti-Jewish sentiment
    1. “Reprehensibly, the churches of Christendom have used the Gospel accounts about Jesus’ death to foment anti-Jewish sentiment, but that notion was far from the minds of the Gospel writers, who themselves were Jews.” (Watchtower 4/11911, p. 19 The Most Infamous Trial Ever Held)
  15. Christendom approves of false worship
    1. Assimilated the worship of Mithra
      1.  “Picture on Page 6…Christendom assimilated the worship of Mithra.” (Watchtower 12/15/2005, p. 6 Christmastime—What Is Its Focus?)
    2. Catholicism’s Madonna and Child are equal with Isis and Horus
      1. Much like Christendom’s Madonna and child, Egypt’s mother-son image (Isis and the infant Horus) was venerated.”.” (Insight Vol. 2 p. 529, Gods of the Nations)
  16. The WBTS sees Christendom as being all non-Jehovah’s Witness groups who claim to be Christian without distinguishing between them
    1. Anglican – Adultery
      1. “More recently, the leader of the Anglican Church in Scotland stated: “The Church should not condemn” affairs as sinful and wrong. The Church must accept adultery is caused by our genetics.” (Watchtower 7/1/1996 7/1 p. 6, How Does God View Christendom’s Worship?)
    2. Clergymen – Homosexuality
      1. “In South Africa, a number of clergymen have spoken out in favor of homosexuality.” (Watchtower 7/1/1996 p. 6, How Does God View Christendom’s Worship?)
    3. Episcopalian – Sexuality
      1. Most of the major [American] church denominations tolerate clergymen who campaign for greater sexual freedom. According to the 1995 Britannica Book of the Year, 55 Episcopalian bishops signed a declaration “affirming the acceptability of homosexual ordination and practice.” (Watchtower 7/1/1996, p. 6, How Does God View Christendom’s Worship?)
  17. Christendom will be destroyed at the 7th seal when 1/3 of mankind “Christendom” dies.
    1. “The Lamb opens the seventh seal. Seven angels receive seven trumpets. Six of the angels blow their trumpets, heralding judgment messages on “a third” of mankind—Christendom. (Rev. 8:1, 2, 7-12; 9:15, 18)” (Watchtower 1/15/2009 1/15 p. 31 par. 7 Highlights From the Book of Revelation—I)
