The Jehovah’s Witnesses are the Christ?

by | Dec 10, 2008 | Jehovah's Witnesses, World Religions

In this old book, The Divine Plan of the Ages, printed in 1906 by the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, is the teaching that the Jehovah’s Witnesses, together with Jesus, constitute the Christ.  This is such an obvious error that little comment need be made.  Nevertheless, the “Christ” is a reference to Jesus.  It means “anointed one” and is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew “messiah.”  It means anointed one; and this title is reserved for Jesus, the One who delivered us from our sins.

The Christians are anointed with the Holy Spirit (1 John 2:27), but this anointing does not qualify them to be equated with Jesus as the Christ–as the ones who are the deliverers from sin as Jesus was.

“Thus the saints of this Gospel age are anointed company-anointed to be kings and priests unto God (2 Cor. 1:21; Peter 2:9 [sic]); and together with Jesus, their chief and Lord, they constitute Jehovah’s Anointed-the Christ,” (The Divine Plan of the Ages, 1906, p. 81-82).

For clarity, context, and readability, here is the text:

“Christ in You, the Hope of Glory”

“This is the great mystery of God which has been hidden from all previous ages, and is still hidden from all except a special class–the saints, or consecrated believers.  But what is meant by “Christ in you?”  We have learned that Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:38), and thus we recognize him to be the Christ–the anointed–for the word Christ signifies anointed. And the Apostle John says that the anointing which we (consecrated believers) have received abideth in us. (1 John 2:27)  Thus the saints of this Gospel age are anointed company–anointed to be kings and priests unto God (2 Cor. 1:21; Peter 2:9 [sic]); and together with Jesus, their chief and Lord, they constitute Jehovah’s Anointed–the Christ.

[sic] means that the error in the quote is in the original.  “Peter 2:9” should be “1 Peter 2:9.”
